Faye couldn't sleep. She was still feeling unsettled after her conversation with the Piemaker. The mink incident had been a shock to the system, and she still felt uncomfortable at her apparent lapse of sanity in exposing her emotions to the man. But neither of those were preventing her from sleeping.

As much as she hated this prison, and would do anything to escape and go back to her own world, back to the Bebop, there were at least a couple good things this place had going for it, as far as Faye was concerned. One that she wouldn't admit to herself was just that Neocontra was different. It was a strange place full of strange people; it wasn't full of troubling memories. She kept herself busy looking for a way out, so the longer she was here, the less frequently she thought about....

Spike.

...And yet, he never really left her alone. The littlest thing, a few careless words from a stranger, the smell of gunpowder and cigarettes, would bring his face to mind... his mismatched brown eyes, so serious, Look at my eyes, Faye, ( ... )

This time, he was paying better attention. Having been caught off-guard by Tohru, of all people, had been a bit of a wake-up call, one could say. But he'd said nothing as she approached, as he was completely uninterested in talking with this unknown woman, and the chances that she wouldn't even see him and would instead just pass on by were fairly good. Until she'd come directly toward him, for some unknown reason.

Shadow turned to look at her just as she shouted, narrowing his eyes harshly at the unwanted noise.

"Watch where you're going," he growled lowly, not in the mood to mess around with idiots. Which, in his opinion, comprised some ninety-nine percent of the compound's population, if not more. If he didn't know who this one was by now, then she wasn't worth knowing at all.

"Holy crap, you scared the shit outta me!" she exclaimed, then glanced down to her fallen cigarette. "Shit!" she muttered, bending over to pick it up. It was soggy. "Awwwwww," she grumped, tossing it away with a noise of irritation.

"Try using your eyes next time." Because really, it wasn't that he had scared her, it was that she had startled herself by not watching where she was going. Hardly his fault.

"And when you're done being scared, I suggest you move along." Though phrased as a suggestion, the tone of his voice made his words sound vaguely threatening. He could make it into an actual threat, too, if she was persistent enough to warrant one. He wasn't feeling forgiving at the moment.

Faye scowled at him. "I was." No she wasn't. "Maybe your being tiny and black and lurking in the shadows had something to do with it." Really, Faye could hardly be expected to take the blame.

Faye rolled her eyes, throwing her hands up. "Sheesh! I'm sorry, I must've missed seeing your name on this bridge, it being dark and all. Shame, really, I was hoping to have an enjoyable and stimulating conversation with you. My loss, I guess." Faye moved off a few steps, pausing to dig her box of cigarettes out of her pocket.

As amusingly ironic as her words were (for there was plenty of his namesake to be had in this place tonight), Shadow wasn't about to laugh. Nor was he interested in explanations, apologies, or stimulating conversation. All he wanted was peace and quiet, but he knew better by now than to expect he would ever get that for long here. There were too many people in too small a place for there to be anywhere truly abandoned enough, and anyway, he didn't want to go through the trouble of making himself scarce. He suspected he could hide himself in an unused room in the offices or bank building, but they were cramped and devoid of snow - although he wasn't exactly comforted by the latter at the moment ( ... )

Faye's small amount of glee at unearthing her smokes was quickly smothered by irritation. "Okay, okay, I'm going, I'm going!" she exclaimed, exasperated. "Don't remember you ever asking," she muttered to herself. She turned to follow the stream, walking away and tossing him a flippant wave. "Enjoy your bridge," she snarked over her shoulder as she left the scene.
