Lina had been cleaning. Lacking anything better to do, she'd taken down her traveling cloak and was going through its pockets, checking to see what sort of things she might be carrying with her.

"Geez, how long has this been in there?" she wondered, tossing aside a chunk of jewel-encrusted statuary. It bounced on the mattress of her bed a few times. "I should have cleaned this thing out months ago."

Already piled up around her were a scattering of gold and gems, some scrolls, crystals of various sizes and colors, a few small weapons, and assorted other odds and ends she'd collected on her various treasure-hunting expeditions, all neatly sorted.

Jesse worked the window open and peered into the room. She didn't go in right away, however, for the room was occupied. Occupied by someone with a small pile of treasure. Jesse stared in wide-eyed wonder. Just a little of that would be enough to keep herself, James, and Meowth well-fed for months! A bit of treasure also might make a good birthday present for Morty. But how to get to the treasure?

Lina reached deep into a pocket and pulled out a paper-wrapped packet. She carefully opened it... and made a face. Whatever had been in the package had apparently once been edible, but that time was several months in the past.

"How did I forget that?" she wondered aloud. Still grimacing, she got up to go find a trash can to put it in. Or perhaps bury it.

Jesse saw her chance and took it! When the little girl seemed like she might be leaving, Jesse began easing the window open carefully. She figured she'd just go in, swipe something, and hurry out.

"I can't believe that was in there," Lina was saying to herself as she disposed of the package. "I normally don't forget about food... I musta been sick or something."

She prepared to return to her counting and sorting, but something - perhaps a noise or perhaps just a breath of air from the open window - alerted her that something was not quite right. Years of bandit-hunting experience kicked in, and she flattened herself against a wall and went creeping slowly towards her door to take a brief peek inside.

Jesse found herself staring at the little treasure pile. She couldn't believe there was so much in one pile, and she didn't know just what to swipe for Morty. She started a silent round of Eenie Meenie Minie Mo.

Oh, you did not just do that, thought Lina, staring at the intruder. What kind of idiot tried to rob a bandit killer? After a bit of watching, Lina decided the answer was "not a good one". A good thief would grab everything and sort it all out later instead of sitting around being choosy.

In a swift leap, she flew through the door, swinging her sword in an arc that stopped just above the wrist of Jesse's outstretched hand.

"Hi," she said sweetly. "Did you need that hand for something, or should I add it to my collection?"

Jesse did the only thing she could think of when it seemed like a sword was about to cut off her hand. She shrieked and stumbled backwards. Whatever happened to letting people steal in peace!?

"That's better!" said Lina. "You keep your sticky fingers off my stuff! I didn't go through all the bother of stealing it just to have some two-bit thief take it from me!"

"Geez, okay!" Jesse snapped, not at all pleased with this turn of events. "All you had to do was say so. You didn't have to about give me a heart attack!"

"Well, you didn't have to sneak into my room," Lina retorted, with unassailable logic. She crossed her arms. "So there."

"Well, you shouldn't have had all this really cool stuff just sitting out," Jesse countered. "It practically invites the thieves in."

"This isn't out," said Lina. "Out there is out. My bedroom is in here. And I didn't leave it just sitting, I'm sorting it."

"Details, details," Jesse grumbled.

"Anyway, you shouldn't steal things if you aren't willing to fight for them," said Lina. "I sure as heck didn't get all this loot by running and screaming every time someone waved a sord at me."

"When it's something I really want, then I'll fight for it," Jesse grumbled. She hated getting caught and sulked openly. "I'm just getting some practice and looking for a late birthday present for someone."
