As far as Sawyer was concerned, this whole tournament thing was no more than a way to pass the time in jail; something he had never tried to deceive himself into thinking Econtra wasn't. Hell, he'd gotten into boxing last time he was in prison a few years back, and was kind of surprised something like this hadn't happened before. No guns? Alrighty then. Made things more interesting anyways.

Mai was here for one reason and one reason only. She enjoyed fighting. It would be a good way to get over the boredom of this place, so she signed up for the tournament. She walked onto the arena, seemingly unarmed. The important word was seemingly. In reality, she had several knives and sharpened sticks hidden in her clothes. Of course, those were cheap steak knives and were likely to break before doing any serious damage, and probably wouldn't do anymore damage than her knives dulled, but at least they would pierce cloth.

And usually that's all she needed. She looked her opponent up and down. "I hope you're more of a challenge than you look." She said in her usual bored tone. He looked maybe like one of the grunts than a real challenge.

Sawyer raised an eyebrow, the expression accompanied by a typical cocky smirk. "Hell, thanks for the vote of confidence, sweetheart." The smirk didn't fade as he eyed her with the quick, assessing gaze of a con who knew to look for details. Looked like she had a hidden weapon or two, though he couldn't get an accurate count. Kind of an important thing to keep in mind though. And, yeah, she might be half his age but she wasn't going to show up here if she couldn't pack a punch.

"So what, we just gonna be all fancey or we just gonna do this the good old-fashioned way and start hittin' each other?" He asked with another smirk.

"Don't call me sweetheart." Mai said flatly. Zuko was the only one who got away with the nicknames. Maybe Ty Lee, but that was Ty Lee.

Perhaps it would be entertaining to toy with this guy then. "Let's see if you can get close." Mai said, holding up her hand like she was examining her nails and not paying attention. Of course, her other hand was already ready to reach a blade. If this guy was going to be cocky, let's see if he got close before she reacted.

Unfortunately for her, James never used anything but nicknames. On the island he had stopped after he had killed the man who had been the original Sawyer; after that there hadn't seemed to be much point. Here, though, it was a different story. No one here had done anything to earn his trust or affection enough to warrant the use of their real name. "Sorry, sister, don't do special orders." He shot back with another annoying smirk.

And, hell, he knew well enough to recognize that as an invitation to get humiliated by someone better than him, but it didn't really matter. He always walked a fine line between being willing to do anything to survive and wanting to get hurt because he deserved it with these things. Either way he came out alright in the end. So he just smirked some more and shrugged like he was thinking about her offer for a second before hauling back for a good old punch in the face.

"We'll have to see about changing that then." Mai said in her usual bored tone.

A good speed in a punch. Potential, but Mai was quite fast herself. She ducked down out of the way of the punch, her hand shooting out to grab his wrist, jerking it forward as her leg swiped under his feet to effectively throw him over her shoulder. Blades were her specialty, but one had to be strong and quick to get them to do what she made them do.

"Good luck, sweetheart." Sawyer shot back, because unless he lost another bet, the nickname was sticking.

He had time for a quick mutter of, "Song of a bitch." Before he was thrown over her shoulder, rolling towards her as he hit the ground and swinging his own legs out in an attempt to knock her feet out from under her. Finesse and technique were not exactly strong points with him. He'd done some boxing in jail, but for the most part he just hit things. Didn't mean he couldn't hold his own; he'd been in plenty of fist-fights, and won his fair share of them. Just that he wasn't fancy about the way he did things.

Mai would admit he was doing a bit better than she thought. After all, he got a pretty good kick. Good enough to knock her feet off the ground, but it was simply a matter of throwing her weight the right way and turning in the air to throw a knife at him and then push herself quickly to her feet as soon as she hit the ground.

She frowned after she released the knife though. She could already tell it was going to miss. Barely, but it was still a miss.

"Son of a bitch!" This time the words came out a lot more pissed as a damn knife thudded into the ground beside Sawyer's head. Shit, who did this kid think she was? John Locke? Well, hell, he reflected, grabbing the knife and yanking it out of the ground, at least now he had a weapon. For the moment he kept a hold on the hilt but kept the blade pointed away from the girl, keeping up his punches.

Mai looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "You don't know knives, do you?" She asked. They barely qualified for throwing. Pure stabbing wasn't going to make them any better. She pulled out several more knives from her sleeves, smirking a bit. Well, he had been a bit amusing. Let's see how he would attack now.

Sawyer let out a quick, though genuine laugh. "Let's just say I got some recent crash courses." He replied dryly. Because, hell, sometimes that was all there was to use on the island. "'Sides, I already got the main idea; stick 'em with the pointy end." Another smirk, even in the middle of a fight.

With a sudden move he burst forward, planning to tackle her, get her arms under her and hold said pointy end under her throat. Hell, worth a shot, right?

Too bad it wasn't going to fly. Mai dashed to the side at the last moment, throwing a knife down to pin the end of his pant leg into the dirt.

Sawyer barely seemed to notice the knife that thudded into his jeans a second after he hid the ground except to roll away sharply and tear himself free. "Hell, sweetheart, you're gonna run outta those soon." He observed with a smirk, tossing this one out of the ring completely.

Mai raised an eyebrow. "True." She said. Two bad she had another dozen at least hidden among her person, not to mention the sharpened chopsticks in the holsters on her forearms under the loose sleeves along with the knives. She held up another knife. "Care to try again?"

Sawyer just laughed, for flashbacking for a second to the island, early on in their stay, when Sayid had stabbed him with a knife pretty damn close to these ones. And lets not forget the whole getting tortured right before that thing. Yeah, he cared to try again. "Hell, sweetheart, if that's the best you can do I ain't got nothin' to worry about." He shot back, lunging forward once more, one hand guarding his face and the other keeping up the punches. Boxing, remember?
