It was very late in the night when Jing finally made his way back to Ast-Tessera. All the transformations had worn off and the thief no longer looked like Postino, nor did he have the inexplicable urge to meet post deadlines. He let himself into his apartment, shedding his orange coat and heavy boots at the door so as not to wake anyone else within. There was no light filtering from underneath Yinsen's door; he assumed the doctor had gone to bed at a reasonable hour. As his eyes adjusted to the dimness, he let himself into the bedroom that he and Kir shared.
His friend was already asleep, black wings darker than the shadows against the pale sheets. He no longer wore the petite body of Fino vin Quart, the pretty girl from Pompier. It had been a bit of a shock to see, but no more so than it had been to see Postino's face where his own should be.
In the weak moonlight that thinned through the window, Jing saw that Aligoté's face was troubled, and his sleep uneasy, and the thief wondered what was going through his mind. Aligoté had been distant lately, always busy in the school kitchen or taking meals to someone. Although he seemed content to be busy, there was a weight riding on him that Jing could see, but wasn't sure he should ask about.
And then, Jing had argued with Toshi. He didn't understand the white-haired man's anger and hatred at the whole world, but he understood far less the man's cutting and angry remarks. They implied that Jing didn't know what he was talking about and that... that Kir was not really his friend.
Toshi was just saying angry things, they don't have any truth to them, Jing repeated over and over to himself. Standing in the darkened room, he bent to pick up Aligoté's black jacket, but something slipped from the pocket and fell to the floor. He grabbed it... a well-worn red bandanna.
Kir's bandanna. Kir's first birthday present, he identified immediately. But then his brow furrowed. Didn't Kir always wear this? But searching his memory, he couldn't remember ever seeing it around Aligoté's neck. Was it just uncomfortable because he was a human now instead of an albatross?
That was another thing, Jing realized. He couldn't remember exactly why Kir was human, or why he went by a different name half the time. He thought fuzzily that coming to Econtra must have changed him, but that didn't seem right either, because he couldn't remember anyone else having been changed so drastically just by arriving. Had something happened in Econtra? But no, he would've remembered that too... wouldn't he?
The thief pressed a hand to his forehead, frowning. As he'd told Al and Ryou, his head would get muddled if he tried to think about certain things for too long. Just like right now.
Could this have been what Toshi was talking about?
"It's nothing... everything is fine..." Jing whispered, breaking just a bit the overbearing silence in the room. "If something was wrong, someone... one of my friends... they'd have said something to me. That's what friends do."
Biting his lower lip, Jing pushed the growing doubts from his mind and slid into his own bed no the other side of the room. He had more important things to think about in the coming days, like the council gathering he was supposed to lead, to worry about his faulty memory and whether he had real friends or not. But for now, he just needed some sleep.
