Duo had been heading up to the roof to kick back on the couch up there, do a little stargazing maybe as the sun set. Maybe do some roof side lurk watching for Mel. Mostly he just wanted to chill. As he started up the steps to the third floor, a flash of brown caught his eye. Guy walking into a room with a big trench coat? Huh. He at first thought nothing of it and started up the next few steps, but his curiosity got the better of him.

He stepped down the stairs and cautiously and stealthily meandered over o the door that had been left open. Tzu Deka? Kaylee's room? Hm. Bet she wouldn't mind him walking on in uninvited. He walked in, spotting the man who had entered, vaguely recognizing him as someone he may have seen on the street, but nothing more.

"Hey."

Mal opened his eyes, rolling his head to glance over at the doorway. Mal was not one to forget faces easily.

"Oh, hey." He sat up a bit. "Just make'n m'self at home." He looked around at the largely empty room, save for one bed that seemed to be occupied. "Don't seem to be much else to do 'round here."

He sat up all the way and swung his feet over the side of the bed. "Seems to be this place ain't much for look'n after a victory and all. Went an' wandered 'round the place a bit after I ran into ya." He looks around the room again as if to accentuate his point. "Can't say this place is much good for a fight."

"If our hosts want us to win their war, they sure ain't provide'n us with much to win it with." He thought he could smell a faint aroma of tomatoes, old, slightly fermented.

"Duo...right?"

Duo listened to the old man speak, ending up feeling a might sheepish, having not remembered Mal right away. He'd met the guy twice after all, two different versions.

"I'll say, real fixer upper." Duo replied, then a nod of agreement. "hate to say it but I don't exactly have alot of motivation, I've fought in a war before and even if I was on the losing side? We still had weapons.. effective ones."

Interesting guy this one was, Duo smirked and nodded, "That's me. Mal?"

Mal nodded at Duo. "That's my name, till someone decides they need it more than I do."

Mal sized him up for a moment. He seemed a bit young to be a war veteran already, but Browncoats weren't far off in age or experience in many cases. "Don't matter much what win'n or lose'n side you're on, as long as it's the right one. Problem is, I can't rightly tell what side I'm on right now."

Mal slowly gets up from the bed. He was a bit stiff from "camping" out for the last few weeks or so. "Right now though, I think our biggest problem, our biggest enemy, is each other. Seems to be the case that many 'o us are at each other's throats."

His hand dropped to his side, and patted the empty holster. "That, and we seem to be have'n a serious deficiency of things t'fight with."

"Nah, it matters.. specially when there's only like.. five people on your side.. kinda matters. But yeah.. long as you're on the right one.." Which side?

Duo was now wondering what compelled him to wander in here, this guy really.. really had alot to say.. heh. "You can say that again..." Both, again, actually.

"Super villains, Vampires.. freaking comic book horror disk set stuff. Drivin' me nuts." nuts that he was dating one of em..

"Well, generally helps to have a few more cover'n your backside, but I know what you mean." His look changes to a strange contortion of confusion and disbelief when he considers all the strange this he has seen here, but is quickly replaced by some wry sarcastic grin. "Maybe we'll get lucky and they pop Santa Claus in here... wish for a gun and a pony, and we can all play cowboys and reavers."

He shakes his head and walks around his bed. He glances back at Duo. "Hey, Don't suppose you know who else is bunk'n in here do ya?" He walks over to the other bed and pokes around it.

"Nobody that I know of.. all I know is that Kaylee lives here. And apparently, once a talking tiger. Couldn't tell you what was going on there though. Aaaand what's a Reaver? You do realize you can get a gun from the indigeo assuming you don't mind fake bullets, right?" Duo smirked wryly and shrugged.

"Kinda what it's there for, though it's gonna be tricky business tryin to get a Pony.. if you really want one.."

He pondered for a moment over the thought of a talking Tiger.
"Huh," was about the only reply he could muster up to the image in his head now.

His face got real serious for a moment at the mention of reavers, looking Duo straight into his eyes. "Son, it's perhaps best you never find out."

"Take your word for it." Duo replied, a brow raised at Mal's severity. Probably didn't mean a whole lot, at least, not here.

"You fly in a spaceship, right? How's that? Just out around Earth or somewhere out in space? I mean the whole cowboy look doesn't scream space traveler.. I outta know.. born in a space colony n' all.."

"Yeah.." Mal's memories of reaver's were not at all pleasant. He'd prefer that no one else be subject to their horrors, and even more if he didn't have to talk about them

"Well, I can fly one, yeah. More of a Captain really. Captain of a ship called Serenity. More my home than any ship I can say." He paused at the mention of Earth, but remembered that the people here were from many different times and places.

"More from the outer rim.. the fringes of space. Can't say I've seen Earth myself."

He looks down at his clothes, then back up at Duo. "And what's wrong with what I'm wearin'? Mighty fine fits if I say so myself. Never a better look'n browncoat." He Grinned slightly.

"Welcome to Earth then? What's left of it anyhow" Duo replied. Deadpan, he nodded, fringes? That's.. Pretty incredible.

Then a smirk laced his expression. "Who said there was anything wrong? Just don't strike me as a space fairing captain. ... It is a nice coat.." he agreed.

"Ah, well, you don't strike me as the warrior type... kinda young." Mal smiled a bit, "But I been known to be wrong, and it's a good reason I don't often take people at face value."

There have been a few occasions where he had. He still is paranoid of lipstick, but that's another story entirely.

"Sent to war at age fifteen.. is kinda young I'll admit but hell.. I'm still the best pilot I know.." Duo replied, a smug smirk laced on his face. "S'good too, you do that you might be disappointed with me."

"Awful young," He paused a moment, walking over to Duo, "But I seen just as young fight' f'the independents on occasion." Mal locked gazes with Duo for a moment, then nodded.

"Awful doesn't begin to describe it, man. Who're the independents?" Duo asked, pulling a chair over and sitting backwards on it to listen to the old man spin his tale."

[[OOC: Sorry it took so long to respond =/ ]]

"Who're the..." Mal stopped himself as his voice picked up a bit. He had to remember that most folks here were from a different time and place, and that not everyone here had to fight against the same alliance that he did."

"Well, we independents were folks of the same mind, not too keen on the government step'n in and regulate'n the way a man should live his life." He paused for a moment.
"The independents fought against the Alliance... a government that decided it needed to "civilize" the outer worlds, and bring it all under their rule and riddle. We lost the war, but I still can't say I was on the wrong side" Mal smiled ever so slighly.

He paused again, letting all that sink in. "Which is why I'm not to keen on bein' brought here and ordered about like cattle."
