People were being strange again. Ahiru didn't like it when people acted different from normal. She liked to believe that everyone was inherently good, but now people weren't acting that way and it confused her.

To try to make sense of things, she made her way outside for a walk. It seemed a good idea at the time, but that lasted until she spotted a wolf. The other wolf she'd met had turned out nice, but he'd been a wolf that was also a person, which kind of reminded her of herself in a way. This wolf, though, looked to be all wolf.

Ahiru darted behind a tree to hide and hope the wolf would pass her by.

Something had darted behind a nearby tree. At least, so Larka's ears told her. It was probably a Lera that had never seen her before and assumed that she was dangerous simply because she was a Putnar.

As if she could be a Putnar here.

With a bit of a sigh, Larka said, "You don't have to hide. Even if I was in the mood to hunt right now, the ring wouldn't allow me to harm you."

Being a trusting sort, Ahiru peered out from behind the tree to stare at the wolf. Talking animals didn't surprise her all that much. Her ballet teacher was a cat, after all. What did surprise her was how nice the wolf sounded. "Um, hello."

"Hello," Larka responded in return with a slight nod of the head. "Yes, I can communicate with humans, no, I wouldn't intend to hurt you even if I could, and if I'm the strangest Lera you've seen here, then you haven't met the Irken."

Ahiru decided not to correct the wolf and tell her that she was really a duck. Even she had more common sense than that. No matter how nice a predator seemed, one did not reveal that one was in fact prey. "What are Lera and Irkens?" Ahiru asked, giving way to her curiosity.

"Lera is the term my kind use for all living creatures," Larka replied. She had given the explanation many times, but she didn't mind. Perhaps hers was the only world in which such a term was commonly used.

She then stared out a little into the distance for a moment as she pondered how to define the other term. "The Irken... judging simply by the actions of the one that I have met, they are a rather strange species of Lera. They insist that their Draggas and Drappas be chosen based on their height, and their arrogance is astounding."

Ahiru listened and wondered if she should ask what "draggas" and "drappas" were. But she'd never learn anything if she didn't ask. She only hoped that the wolf didn't mind a lot of questions from a curious duck-turned-girl. Ahiru took a deep breath.

"Lera is a very pretty word; a lot prettier than 'hrekin.' Achmed says that a lot. He gets annoyed and says, 'Bloody hrekin.' I think hrekin means 'poop.' Does your kind have a different word for 'poop' too? Is everyone on your world a wolf? I haven't ever met many wolves. The only wolves I've ever met are here. But my teacher at home is a cat. Do cats talk on your world too? Do you even have cats? What are 'draggas and drappas'? You look really really soft. Can I pet you?"

Well, wasn't this human a curious one. But Larka didn't mind answering her questions.

"We don't have a different word for that, no. And there are a great number of species where I come from, including humans. Though, the Humans and the Varg rarely come into contact - the Humans attack my kind when they see us, usually.

"My homeland has lynxes, at the very least, though I've never met one in person. Most Lera can only speak amongst their own kind - I am a rarity, where I come from, in that I can speak with all species.

"Dragga is my kind's word for the most powerful male member of a pack - your kind, I believe, would use the word 'Alpha'. Similarly, Drappa is my kind's word for the most powerful female in a pack."

She bent down so that she was lying down on the ground. "And yes, if you wish, you may pet me."

Ahiru wasted no time in taking advantage of this opportunity. She moved closer to the wolf and began to carefully run her fingers over her fur. Ahiru was delighted to find that the wolf was as soft as she looked. "My name's Ahiru," she told the wolf.

Being petted wasn't an unpleasant feeling, Larka found. In fact, it was rather calming.

"Ahiru," she echoed. "That's a pretty name. Mine is Larka. It's nice to meet you, Ahiru."
