Summary: Belldandy decided it was time to spread a bit of chaos and activate the mind control spell. Of course, it has to open with a bang and the Fall Ball is just the time.

After having received definite confirmation that his girlfriend was attending, Zuko headed to the area of the park where the ball was being held and stepped into the tent dressed in full Fire Nation regalia, dressed as the prince he was with his shaggy, unkempt hair that was usually down and threatening to block the sight of both his eyes, held u in a top knot secured with his great-grandfather's crown. He wondered idly if Azula was going to make an appearance and if she'd be dressed similarly before he began to search for Mai with his hands clasped hind his back, child held high, and spine straight. His usual lazy slouch was gone and now carried himself through the tent as only royalty could.

Mai arrived in a new outfit Zuko had sent her. She looked around the party. It was a bit too bright for her tastes, but that was to be expected. Well, if she found Zuko, things should turn out just fine. She might even enjoy herself.

Zuko had spent more time than was probably necessary while looking for something appropriate for Mai to wear without asking her what she wanted. It was something he was determined to make a surprise and when he spotted her, knew he'd made the right choice. Finding something that was both in Fire Nation colors and in a style that Mai liked had been difficult, but he'd pulled it off. And she looked good.

The prince smiled and made his way over to her, stopping short of her, bowing and using her title as if the entirety of the Fire Nation was watching them.

"Lady Mai."

Mai looked over at Zuko and smiled. She really did find he looked good in anything, but he truly did look like a noble prince. Even with the scar. "Prince Zuko." She said in response.

It was odd, hearing her call him Prince Zuko. He didn't think she'd ever used the title when talking to him and if she had, it had been when they were kids and he had been so disinterested in hanging out with his sister's friends that he'd neglected to notice and thus didn't care to remember. He held out a hand, "May I have this dance?"

Mai put her hand in his. "You certainly may." She said. It was probably one of the few times in her life where she acted polite and WASN'T bored out of her skull or wanting to throw a knife at someone.

He finally let the laugh out that he'd been holding back when he pulled her to him, one holding hers and the other at her waist. Zuko could dance, of course. It was something required of him as a prince, something that had been taught to him starting at a young age, but wasn't a talent he paraded about to the public.

"Back to formalities," he said with a smirk. "All this place needs is some fire and less light and bright colors and it could pass for the palace."

Mai fell into step easily, following Zuko's lead. After all, dancing was required of her as well. She shrugged slightly. "Well, it is a strong habit." She said and looked around. "You think so? I think it might pass better for something in the Earth Kingdom." She commented.

Zuko made a face. "I hate this place, but let's not insult Belldandy by comparing her efforts to Ba Sing Se." He smirked soon after to show that he was attempting to crack a joke. For the first time in a long time, Zuko was honestly happy--even here--and his mood showed as much.

It really should have told him something, though, for he was never happy for very long. A happy Zuko usually meant that something bad was about to happen, something Zuko himself was blissfully unaware of.

"At least her party doesn't have women walking around with the same creepy smile." Mai said, taking a quick look around. "There are no waiters at all, it seems."

"Yes, well--"

Whatever Zuko was going to stay died in his throat as his vision swam and brain froze, despite it's sudden inward screams of protest and warnings to Mai that she would be unable to hear. What seemed like ages was only a brief moment of hesitation, though, and Zuko soon composed himself.

And shoved Mai away.

Mai noticed it. Of course she did, she had sharp eyes. Something in Zuko's demeanor had changed. Drastically. But...what? And why?

And then she was shoved away, stumbling back several steps and looking shocked. "Zuko?"

"That's Prince Zuko," he snapped, lifting his chin in a way that was meant to be intimidating and show that he viewed and held himself as a superior more than the ability to carry himself like the royal he was, as he had been doing previously. He turned from her then, brushing imaginary dirt off the armor on his shoulders and tugging at the collar to adjust it so it sat evenly on his neck and not in the more comfortable position his more docile side had put it on before coming here.

Someone came a little too close to him and he spit flames, seething: "Watch it, peasant!"

Mai was stunned for a few moments before she frowned. She grabbed his shoulder. "What's wrong with you, Zuko?!" She demanded.

Zuko easily pulled away from her touch, sneering at her and leaning in towards her face, hovering closely with his eyes narrowed gold slits. "Don't. Touch. Me."

He gave her another good shove before whirling around and moving through the crowd with his arms crossed over his chest, expression distasteful and eyes glaring at whatever they landed upon.

And now Mai was mad. Whatever has possessed Zuko, she didn't like and she did not like being treated like that. She followed him. "Zuko!" She said, a bit louder than what she usually spoke in, but not a yell. She pulled a steak knife and threw it when she saw the opening to have it go by his head and go on threw the tent canvas without hitting anyone. All on purpose. "I didn't touch you." She said coldly.
