Lying to Mai never ended well and it was Azula's words about keeping Mai in the dark about his alter ego in the back of his mind that kept distracting him as he moved about the city in the shadows. He had no real goal tonight, other than to continue getting used to wearing the mask again and couldn't take his mind off the fact that after promising to never lie to her again, he had. Made up some sorry excuse for a tale about fighting with Zhao against the spirit when he had really fought Zhao as the spirit. Tui and the Avatar had killed Zhao before he could tell anyone who was behind the mask and Azula only knew because Zuko had told his sister himself months ago.
Perhaps it was time he let Mai in on this. She was sure to be cross with him for the deception, but better to bite the bullet now than later.
He made his way to her apartment and moved in through the window of the room that belonged to Toph. The little earthbender was still missing, someone that didn't sit too well with him, but since her stuff was still there, he assumed she'd be returned. He hoped she hadn't got herself retained for trying to take the wall down with her earthbending again.
Moving out of that room, he shut the door softly behind him and moved into the main room.
