So the young goddess had taken it upon herself to be things like nice and noble and help out those that were lost around the compound find their apartments. It wasn't, you know, for completely selfish reasons like she was bored and couldn't go poking around the park much without running into that horrid, horrid cloud. That thing really needed to go and when she found out who caused it, Persephone would be giving them an earful.
Speaking of the cloud, Persephone skirted her way around it, eyes roving over the park for anyone lost looking. Well, that's how the man had described himself, anyway, but it wasn't much of a description to go on. Heck, she didn't even know his name.
Maybe this was a failed attempt after all and she should just let him be. Or...
Wits! She had them, really. Persephone switched on her PDA with a smug smile, finding the man again over the network and speaking into the recorder, "Hello? Seems I'm having a bit of trouble finding you. I'm at the park, anyway. Can you see me at all? Girl with hair like leaves in the fall or somesuch?"
The sound startled him only slightly. He hadn't been expecting anyone to try and get in touch with him just yet. Reaching for his own PDA, he sent out a response.
"I think so." Indeed, he did see a bit of red-orange amongst the green of everything else. Probably her. "I'll head over there." Still holding the PDA, Acheron strode towards what he assumed was the girl he'd been speaking to, thankful that it wasn't autumn or he'd have a more difficult time locating her.
"My apologies. I should have given you a description so you'd know who to look for." He certainly sounded polite, if not a touch cold. The same seemed to radiate from his expression. Nice enough, but filled with some distant chill.
Well he was certainly different from what the goddess had been expecting. Still... Never judge a book by its cover and all that. Not like the saying was all that common around her pantheon (gods don't need books!), but it seemed to fit the situation rather appropriately.
"Oh, it's no problem. Didn't even think of it at the time." Persephone said lightly, holding out a hand for him to shake. It was fast becoming one of her favorite mortal gestures, next to waving like a madman.
He took the offered hand gently and with a small smile.
"Thank you for taking the time to assist me. I'm not accustomed to being lost." After a pause, Acheron shrugged. "And yet, I'm not accustomed to being taken into odd places against my will, either. Hm, but what can you do?" At least he was taking it well. Being Drafted was just a minor setback, judging by his tone.
At least he was taking it better than other new arrivals she could mention. But it was best to forget about them now, the other day not having been all that pleasant.
"Not much, I'm afraid," the goddess replied with a shrug, returning the smile. She glanced over her shoulder a moment, making sure that he was following. "I mean, it gets rather dull around here and I haven't seen much fighting except from the residents, but... Eh. It's home, I guess?"
She'd see him keeping fair pace behind her, listening carefully to what the goddess was saying.
"I'm sure I can find some way to keep myself productive." If he could manage to stay busy when on the run from LiteraTecs, he could certainly manage it here. Hades was never one to let a situation get the better of him. "Home indeed. Better than home, really. Nobody to run from here."
"You have to run much at home?" The question was posed out of idle curiosity, the goddess picking her way carefully around the plants and flowers of the park so as not to disturb them. The last thing she needed was for them to rope her into a conversation when she was trying to show someone to their room. Silly things, always wanting attention.
"Yes. There's always someone that wants a piece of me." Or to blow him into pieces, but that was splitting hairs. Acheron grinned. "Good exercise, though. At least I never have to worry about getting out of shape."
Maybe he was like a superhero, Persephone mused to herself. There were certainly enough in this place and the description sounded about right going off what she gathered from her friends. "It does sound exciting, though!" the goddess laughed before...
Crap. She still hadn't gotten his name, had she? That was terribly rude of her. Resisting the urge to facepalm, she smiled apologetically, "I'm Persephone, by the way. I only just realized we never properly introduced ourselves."
Exciting? He tried not to laugh. Not the word he would have used for it. The excitement of being on the run died an early death. It was just routine these days.
"Oh, how rude of me." He mused a moment. Persephone? Not a name one ran into outside the mythology books. His grin widened just a touch. "Acheron Hades. It's a pleasure to meet you." The coincidence was an odd one. Delightfully odd.
So the Acheron portion of the name was a surprised, but Hades? Persephone stumbled, almost stopping in her tracks, eyes going wide and beyond grateful that she was a few steps ahead so that he couldn't see her face. Which, by the way, had gone deathly pale.
And he was living just a couple of floors above her, too. Fantastic. "P-pleasure's all m-mine," she stammered, walking just a little faster and doing everything in her power not to bolt.
He was certainly not her husband, but with all the other worlds around? Gods knew he could be just another form.
Acheron had to restrain a wide smile when he saw her stumble. Nice to know his name still held some sort of fear, even in a strange place. True, it wasn't because of anything he'd done, but... splitting hairs again.
He lengthened his stride to keep up with Persephone's new pace. "Are you alright, Miss Persephone?"
And... that only caused her to go faster. Forget being diplomatic, maybe she could just ditch him here and get out of there quickly without him following. It seemed like good plan. "F-fine. Just fine."
"You don't sound fine." It was hard to keep the taunting edge out of his voice. "Why are you running from me, Miss Persephone? Was it... something I said?"
It was hard, but the goddess forced herself to slow down. The plants around her seemed to shudder and droop, lifting their leaves to hide their petals. That was very much what Persephone wanted to do right now.
"Oh no. I just... felt like taking a run. That's, ahm, all," she said lamely, shifting uncomfortably. Note to self: no more helping people. Ever.
Acheron slowed only when he was right behind Persephone, taking a moment to lean forward ever so slightly while walking.
"Do I frighten you?" He asked in a low voice. "Do you think I've come to take you away?"
That voice made Persephone's blood run cold and she actually stopped, forcing back a scared whimper.
"Y-you're not him." It was said more as a reassurance to herself than anything else, but it didn't help much. Or at all.
Mm. This was his element. How long had it been since he'd really taken the time to enjoy the fear of another?
"Oh, I'm not? Can you be sure?" He turned, walking slowly around Persephone with a look of frigid amusement on his face. "You were saved once. Here, there is no Hermes to guide you back to your mother. There's no Underworld either, but... one will make due with what one has."
This... was not good. She couldn't be sure, could she? Especially not with the way the gods of her world could change shape with ease. But her story almost seemed to be common knowledge to some of the residents around the compound -- something that could be found in books. No, she couldn't be sure at all.
Persephone gulped, steeling herself. Be brave. Be brave through the dark and the ice and the cold. This wasn't the Underworld and there were the cuffs, should all else fail. The goddess wrapped arms around herself, glaring at Acheron, though her eyes glittered with tears. "You can't hurt me here. Leave me alone."
Her reaction was wonderful. What fun.
"I don't have to use my hands to hurt you, Persephone. There are other, worse ways than physical violence to cause pain. But don't worry." Acheron paused and adjusted his glasses, sure to push on his words to make them feel more like the truth. "I'm not going to hurt you. Just watch over you. All year long."
It was like her stomach dropped out from underneath her. All she could was stare, silently crying.
And then Persephone's brain kicked in. The goddess had to get away -- she didn't have to stay there, not with him. Brambles curled around her feet as she spoke next, the plants hoping to menace while she took a step back. "I-I'm leaving."
Acheron didn't move to stop her. He simply continued to stand and watch; smiling his evil smile at Persephone.
"Go ahead. After all, you should know well enough you can't run forever. Like it or not, you belong to me. You always will."
It took her a moment to get her legs to function, but once she managed, she was bolting over the grass of the park and fleeing into the city, running faster than she ever had.
Yeah, she was not helping new arrivals anymore.
Following her would be the sound of his echoing laughter, just as cruel-sounding as his words had been. Once it subsided some minutes later, Acheron turned and stalked out of the park. Today was a good day.
