Persephone had finally managed to make the little voices from that shiny device shut up. What the hell was the point of it any way, to throw insults at her when all she wanted to do was go home to her mother? To the Underworld she needed that.
Although she could see why they were angry if they all had be held up in a derelict city like this. At least, she assumed the voices from that thing were coming from people in the city. Maybe they really were coming from home and this all just some elaborate prank pulled by the gods of Olympus? She wouldn't put it past them, actually, they did this sort of thing all of the time to the mortals; their kin were really only the next step up.
And argh, this bench was uncomfortable. If they were going to play a joke on her, the least they could was not give her a bench that had splinters, much less one that wasn't so weirdly shaped from the benches she was used to. At least it was still recognizable as such, whereas the houses were definitely different enough that she had done a double take. Where were all of the beautiful pillars, the wide open fields; the plants and fountains and curtains of silk? Instead the place smelled dank and looked like it was about to fall over if you went up and pushed at the side of any one building.
Persephone had hated the thought that she would have to rely on any of the people in this awful place to take care of her, but she was so tired. Those months spent down in the Underworld had really taken a toll on her and, after catching her reflection in one of the greenhouse windows, she could see how much it had. Her pale skin was even paler and her lips were tinged with blue, her hair a lot less vibrant than it had been. She looked like the life had been sucked out of her, and it had in a way, being deprived of any sort of sunlight. But there seemed to be plenty of it here and maybe she would get better in time, given the chance.
This war thing was stupid, but if she were somewhere else entirely... At least she wouldn't have to spend time in the Underworld again.
