She shook her head again. “If I went with you, if I accepted this as being real, then I’d just be denying the decision I made years ago, to live my life in a way that would make you proud of me. Even if I have nowhere to go, I decided that I would live, that I would sing, for your sake, Brother.”
She stood up, pulling her brother’s arm off of her. “Asuka?” he asked, confused and saddened.
Asuka turned away. Tears streamed down her face and her voice wavered, but she ignored that. “We’ll meet again someday, Brother. But until that day comes, I can’t come with you.” She started to look back, but decided against it, and simply concluded, “Until that time… farewell, Brother,” before walking away into the mist, away from the tree, away from the dream, hopefully back toward reality.
She didn’t look back, and thus had no way to know that as she walked away, Fubuki closed his eyes and smiled slightly in understanding. She did, however, hear him echo, “Until that time, then. Farewell, Asuka.”
