i had a rather unique experience last night. my aunt took me with her to her friend's "haunted" log cabin to be part of a paranormal investigation. it's something i've always wanted to do, and it was... interesting.

the main investigator was a very nice guy by the name of danny huang. he set up some emf detectors and didn't find any electrical fields at all because the cabin didn't have electricity. he also had the requisite sound amplifiers and the voice recorders to catch any evp. but the coolest thing was the ghost radar, an app for his iphone that supposedly let spirits talk through the phone. i want that so badly. *lol*

besides danny and his partner for the night, cystal, in attendance were the cabin's owner, judy, and her sister and three daughters. as danny set up his equipment it was rather like a family reunion/dinner party. there were even snacks set out like a buffet. not exactly what i was expecting.

after dark, everyone settled down. there were candles lit all over the cabin and a roaring fire in the fireplace for both heat and light because of the no electricity thing. we also had a kerosene heater going. more on that in a moment. we started with everyone being very quiet and judy asking questions to the spirits. danny instructed them to knock once for yes and twice for no. after a few minutes, judy asked "is there a spirit here named derek?" or something to that effect, and there was a knock to the floor. i was sitting next to my aunt mary, and i thought it was her kicking the floor, but she hadn't moved. there was a definite knock, though, and we all felt the vibrations in the floor.

danny got what seemed to be a genuine evp, too. at one point, we heard a woman whisper. listening to the playback, it sounds like she said "there's nobody here," in a really slow and deliberate voice. kinda freaky, actually.

the real kicker, though, was when i had my eyes closed and was listening quite intently to the sounds of the cabin and felt mary tap me twice on the arm to get my attention. only, when i turned to her, she had her hands tucked under her chin and hadn't moved in minutes. that actually freaked me out a bit. later, judy had the same kind of feeling, only it was as if someone had touched her hair.

the ghost radar was set up, and that was really kind of cool. it says random words supposedly picked out by the spirits in the room, and i have to admit that there were some weird coincidences. when the investigators were discussing how to set up some equipment, the radar said "directions." when danny suggested we take a break for a moment, it said "eat." things like that. i really, really want one.

to tell the truth, though, the whole thing had an air of ridiculousness to it. danny has only been doing this since last october and still seemed rather amateurish. crystal seemed too interested in sharing stories about the famous ghost hunters and psychics she'd met and the tv shows she'd been on. and that heater i mentioned? every time it gurgled, which it did often, danny jumped and was all "what was that?!" like he'd just caught something good on tape. and that break we took? was two hours of talking and smoking and laughing. it was a bit surreal. we were there to contact ghosts and everyone was having a party, instead. i mean, they even had the makings for s'mores, for goodness sake. it was all a bit like a seance you have at slumber party when you're 10, you know?

so, all in all, it was interesting. i'm glad i went, even though all the smoke from their cigarettes and the from the fire nearly killed my eyes and i still smell like a campfire. we left about 11:30pm, but danny and crystal stayed the night. i'd be interested to see what they found, if anything. but i'm not expecting much. ;)
