Another Stomach-churning Reveal from Hurricane Katrina's Aftermath

Aug 31, 2009 20:17

There are only so many hours in a day, and one still has to make a living, which is the only excuse I can claim for not hearing about this incident or exceptional article sooner: "Katrina's Hidden Race War" by A.C. Thompson for The Nation www.thenation.com/doc/20090105/thompson It tells the untold "race reversal" story of violence in New Orleans, perpetrated by white militiamen in a non-flooded, middle-class area of the city called Algiers Point. Despite its length, I devoured this article, battling the churning in my stomach the entire time. The article is assuredly a long-term investigative journalism masterpiece, and a harrowing tale of how humanity's baser natures, including dislike of difference (racism in this case) come to the fore in the aftermath of chaos and tragedy. We don't even know for sure how many African Americans they killed outright; at least 3, perhaps as many as 5. And how many wounded, who later died due to lack of medical facilities?

Every one of the men that patrolled for that band of neighborhood vigilantes should be brought to justice. It physically pains me that they won't. Especially when you know that they would have been, if the tables had been turned.
