Say NO to the "New" GM

Aug 11, 2009 12:31

I don't fault GM for biting the bullet and declaring bankruptcy, and dividing the company into the successful lines under the "new" GM and leaving the unsuccessful ones under Court Supervision in the "Motors Liquidation Co." But I have a definite problem with the "new" GM not taking responsibility for the mistakes and contracts of the old company. Check out this article from Huffington Post, "GM Says Mercury Pollution From Old Cars Is Not Its Problem; Potentially Sabotages Program For Safe Disposal." www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/11/gm-says-mercury-pollution_n_256278.html

Nearly half of the vehicles built in the 80s and 90s with mercury switches in the trunk convenience locks and anti-lock brakes were GM vehicles, and since 2005 GM has been the largest monetary contributor to a partnership between vehicle makers, environmentalists, and car recyclers, called ELVS (End of Life Vehicle Solutions Corp.) The program allows car recyclers to affordably remove the switches so they can be safely disposed of, instead of contaminating the area around the scraped car.
"Mercury released into the air can accumulate in plants, fish and humans. Children and fetuses are vulnerable to the effects of the toxic metal, which can damage the development of the nervous system."
It is scheduled to continue until 2017, but if GM pulls their portion of the funding, it will probably die before 2010 roles around.

The new GM is trying to cultivate a green image, but not shouldering this burden shows that as the lie it should be. So say "NO" to the new GM until they take responsibility for this!

green, health, take action
