we ran into this pretentious chinese parent that my mom used to work under (he was an unfriendly boss too). His daughter will be going to Amherst. I'm just glad that she's not going to UCB with me (she got in too)
Well actually, only I semi-literally ran into something. I was looking for the parental units so that I could strategically throw a box of panda cookies into the cart before they went in the line. After doing so, I looked up and saw that the maternal unit was talking to said pretentious parent, whom I haven't seen in a few years (and so it took a while to recognize him). I waved hastily and then bent down to roll up my jeans because I was wearing my asian school flats, and I was basically sweeping the floor for the supermarket without pay. The pretentious parent kept giving me looks of confusion, which made me want to laugh. Apparently, 2 months ago when he heard that I got into UChi, he had thought that I must have been some super smart asian kid. I bet he was expecting to see someone nerdy and responsible (coughYiming!cough). Instead, what he saw was a girl who hadn't showered this day, entranced by a shelf of kimchi while fidgeting with her jeans (which, by the way, I wore out all by myself. No pre-holed jeans for me!).
He asked why I'm not going to UChi, and my mom said "cause I have no money." Later she said she wanted to add, "well maybe she would be if you had given me better raises!" I think she should have. It could easily pass for one of those almost-but-not-quite-awkward, passive-aggressive jokes that she can get away with because she no longer works under the person.
