Characters: Mukahi Gakuto and Zaizen Hikaru
Rating/Warnings: Smartassery, snark and I'm pretty sure some hostility on both parts.
When/Where: Campus (Tuesday Aug. 24th I think)
What: Zaizen tries going to the library after Night Class curfew, and Gakuto stops him.
Comments: Uhm. They're something special? Also, short log is short.
Clearly, some rules were meant to be broken.
Zaizen Hikaru, by appearance, looked like someone who would willingly and knowingly break rules set in place for a very good reason. With dark spiky hair, multiple ear piercings, and an expression that generally gave off the impression that he was bored or didn't want bothered, it was no surprise. Nor was it one to find the Aristocrat striding confidently toward the library with his laptop case slung over his shoulder.
The rules be damned when he couldn't sleep and needed a way to make himself tired. It was a retarded one, and nothing short of the Headmaster finding him himself would make Zaizen go back to his room.
Head leaning back against a tree, Gakuto was lost in thought. Not about classes, no. They were generally boring and required little thought at all. No, his thoughts had strayed once again to the student clientele and the current issues in the neighboring town. Vampires. How he despised them. Still, he couldn't help but notice that they seemed to be dotting their Is and crossing their Ts. It really was confusing.
"Guess I'll go back out tonight..." he frowned up at a tree branch, though cut himself short. The hair at the nape of his neck was standing up... which meant....
Eying the landscape he saw him, walking towards the library with purpose in his steps. "Where do you think you're going...." the red head murmured, getting to his feet to intercept. "OI. Off limits. Shouldn't you be in your dorm?"
While Zaizen typically looked unaware of his surroundings - or just didn't care about them - he was careful enough. He would have written the redhead off as just another student, until he heard the other teen talk. Then his view changed to someone who was butting into his business and he wasn't sure if he cared for that or not.
His thumb hooked into the strap over his shoulder and readjusted it. Green eyes turned deceptively dull with boredom.
"Don't tell me - campus security?" A deep voice responded, obvious sarcasm laced through his tone. "I guess midgets are supposed to be intimidating now."
"Tch." This guy already pissed him off. "Hardly. You have more to worry about when you're dealing with me..." Moving past the vampire Gakuto planted himself before him, halting his steps. "Maybe you didn't get the memo, but blood suckers aren't allowed out during the day. Go be a good boy and return to your cage."
Somehow, he doubted it would be that easy. And there wasn't a Guardian in sight. Ah well, he would deal with whatever came his way.
Blood suckers. Whether it was an unintentional slip or not, he didn't pretend to know or care. All that mattered was what came along with it; the knowledge that this shorty knew exactly what he was and where he was supposed to be. That meant the redhead was 'special', and not the yellow bus kind.
How troublesome.
Zaizen gave a simple, easy shrug of his shoulders. A signal that he didn't care for that rule, and by defying it was clearly saying what he thought of it.
"There's nothing in the handbook that says when we're allowed to use the library." His eyes took a sharper edge as his lips quirked a little. "So put a muzzle on it, Watch Dog."
Gritting his teeth, Gakuto's face hardened. This guy was frustrating, perhaps even more so than that Oshitari Yuushi, which was something close to miraculous. "The Academy doesn't have a coller on me," Gakuto growled, not budging from his spot. "So don't line me up with them."
Crossing his arms he took a step forward, hoping to drive the other boy back.
No, Zaizen wasn't used to people encroaching on his space no matter how personal or impersonal, but he did know Niou Masaharu and that counted for something. It meant he wasn't that easily intimidated. Though, even without knowing Niou, it wasn't easy. It wasn't that he thought he was better than someone else - far from it, actually - but that he just didn't give a damn what they thought of him or how they treated him. Why should he?
His stance relaxed as if the other teen was nothing to him or he just didn't care to fight.
"I'm not lining you up with anyone." Zaizen's deep voice came out in a tone that said he was bored as he shoved his hands into his pockets. "You did."
"Teme...." the red head growled, coming to a stop two feet in front of Zaizen. He hated being looked down on more than anything. Glancing about their surroundings he reached out and took hold of the taller boy's arm.
"Enough of your blabbing. You're going back." Not waiting for an answer he started to tug at the dark haired vampire's arm, in attempts to get him to budge. It wasn't as though he could attack in their current setting, so he figured what harm could it do? "Or should we make a stop by the Headmaster's so you can remember the rules for the Moon Dorm?"
He almost laughed aloud at being told he of all people was babbling. All Zaizen wanted to do was get into the library to finish off a homework assignment, and here this human came. If he'd have minded his own business they'd have both gotten what they wanted soon enough.
Heaving a sigh, he moved his feet to step so he could pull himself out of the redhead's grip as he tugged his arm away.
"Don't touch me." Zaizen mumbled uncomfortably. Simply put, he hated when people got that close.
"If you want to say anything to the Headmaster, then explain why you're stopping another student from doing his homework." His gaze narrowed almost challengingly at the other teen before he started toward the library. Zaizen was willful enough to get his way when it truly mattered.
"The problem isn't in wanting to do your homework, and you know it, blood sucker," Gakuto hissed, spinning on the spot to keep the vampire in the center of his vision. Instinctively his right hand went to the handle of the gun belted to his hip.
"Besides, how do I know you didn't just get hungry? I'm sure there are plenty of Day Class in the library now... aren't there? Did you think you could just stop by and grab a bite?"
"Oh em gee." The sarcasm dripped from Zaizen's voice. "You totally caught me. I'm on my way to an all you can eat smorgasbord of nerdy students willing to bear their necks for the first set of fangs they see."
For theatrics, the Aristocrat laid his hand on his cheek as his expression then contorted to a blatantly phony joy. A moment later, it vanished entirely as he stare seriously at the other teen, looking more unamused than anything. "Get real, short stack."
Not wanting to waste more of his time - Zaizen was starting to finally get tired - he started toward the library once more. He took a half step, before he decided his assignment could screw itself and started back toward the dorms.
After a moment Gakuto's hand slid from his gun. It seemed, though it had took entirely too long - he had won this battle. Gritting his teeth against the remark as to his height, he ignored it to refer to the former. "With the morons that go to school here, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. As for you, I don't know what your intentions are. All I know is that vampires typically don't give a damn who they devour. And I honestly can't see any other reason for you to be out when it's still day time."
It was hard for the Aristocrat to take offense to anything - even harder still to allow that to be visible. But all Zaizen could hear were the other teen's words echoing in his head and it made him tense up as if ready for a physical attack.
He knew he needed to leave that alone. It couldn't be helped that his race were monsters and seen as such. Getting defensive and speaking out against what was just said would only leave a visible weakness hanging over his head. The problem was, it was easier said than done to just leave it alone. Zaizen Hikaru was nothing like his kind.
"You have ears hidden behind that hair - use them and pay attention when someone's talking. I came out to do homework." Sighing, he forced himself to relax as he slowed his steps down to a casual pace away from the hunter. "I don't eat anything with a face unless it allows me to bite it."
He had sensed it. The tension in the air had crackled for a moment as the vampire had tightened his muscles. In that instant the red head had withdrawn his gun, pointing it at the boy before him, not shooting - but also not taking chances. Noble or not, a blood sucker was a blood sucker.
However the tension melted a moment later, Zaizen having apparently reeled himself in. "I'm sure anyone in your position would say that." A frown was on his face as he lowered the gun. "Go back to the dorms. You can just as easily work on your homework there... so go."
Screw the homework, I'm finally tired he wanted to say but didn't. Instead, something entirely different popped out of his mouth.
"What, don't trust me in a library with books, but you trust me enough to go back to the dorm alone?" Zaizen's lips curved in amusement. "You're not the average hunter."
In all honesty, he'd meant that as a slight against him and hoped that the other teen was smart enough to get it. Finally picking the pace up a bit, he shoved his hands into his pockets and kept toward the dorms. At least his goal was achieved by coming out into the sun - he'd found something to drain off the excess energy he had in order to sleep. This hunter was exhausting.
The snarkiness in Zaizen's tone did nothing for Gakuto's attitude. Frown hardening he quickened his pace to fall into step behind the taller vampire. "No, I'm better than average. But you're out of your mind if you don't think I'm not going to see you tucked back into your cell."
'Honestly,' he thought bitterly, 'how could the Guardian's have not noticed him wandering out this far?' The Moon Dorm wasn't even in sight yet. "Hurry it up. My free time is almost gone, thanks to you."
"You mean thanks to you. I didn't do anything." It may have been childish, but the desire to trip the redhead rose up inside him. He stamped it down with a mental shrug. If there was one thing he knew, it was the abuse of power - especially against a human - would garner some hefty punishments dished out by the only pureblood in the school. Then his parents would be brought in. Maybe even his brother. Then they might blame it on Niou's influence and that was just a hassle. It was better that he left childish antics to someone else.
"Do you call your own dorm a 'cell'?" Zaizen asked after a short moment, green gaze falling on the redhead beside him.
The red head tsked, glaring at the back of Zaizen's head. "If you hadn't been out of your dorm I wouldn't have bothered, now would I?" Yes, this guy was truly frustrating. Skirting around a bench Gakuto managed to match Zaizen's pace, staying at his left side.
"I don't like being stuck in there at night, no. But I know why they keep your kind locked up - and as for the the Day Class - it's better off that they don't know that all of the pretty boys and girls they idolize aren't monsters. So I guess the rules are for the best."
"Oh, yeah." He scoffed softly. "I twisted your arm to stop me because I was begging for attention that hard, I need a hunter to talk to."
Zaizen fought to keep his eyes from rolling by staring at a rock several paces ahead. If nothing else, at least this made for an entertaining story for both of them later.
Pulling a hand from his pocket, he used it to adjust the strap slung over his shoulder once more. It gave him a moment to think and stall on how to reply to his kind being locked up. Usually, he played the smart guy and kept some things to himself, but the contempt he heard in the hunter's voice annoyed him. Zaizen hadn't done anything to earn it.
"But some rules are meant to be broken. The Night class is never going to adjust to humans if they're not allowed to mingle."
"And I'm just dying to have a nice afternoon conversation with a vampire," Gakuto spat, nudging the other with his shoulder. It wasn't as though he had asked the guy to leave his dorms - but there was no way in hell he was just going to let him get away with it.
"It's not going to happen." Gakuto was well aware that the key prospect of this school was to better communication between vampires and humans - but that simply didn't sit right with him. Nor, apparently, with the Hunter Association - hence why he was here. "It's a nice thought - but people don't change their colors that easily."
This was where Zaizen chose to keep silent. He might have lead the conversation toward a moral debate about their respective races, but it didn't mean he actually wanted to have one. Not even when he was more awake.
The truth of it was, he didn't know where he stood. The Aristocrat considered himself something of a vegetarian vampire where blood was concerned. He didn't drink unless he had to for whatever reason, and the only time he really saw blood was when he was forced to practice his ability. Which was, he'd admit, disgusting. The manipulation of blood both inside and out of the body. If he wanted, he could pretend like the redhead was his puppet and make him walk back the way they came. Or he could cut someone using his own blood like a razor.
Disgusting.
Approaching the dorm entrance, he pushed the heavy wooden door open enough so there would be enough room for him to squeeze through. Before he decided to disappear, though, there was something he wanted to say.
"Whatever." He finally murmured tiredly. "I'll be back out other times. If you really don't trust me, play chaperon when you see me. I don't care."
Zaizen's nonchalant reply annoyed Gakuto slightly, but the red head managed to shake it off, placing one hand on the dorm door, as if about to slam it on the other's frame. "Tch. I'm not your damned baby-sitter," he growled, fingers tightening on the wood, before slamming it to.
"And stay in there... God what a nuisance..."
Somewhere in the distance a bell chimed, ushering the Day Class students back into the halls and away from the bright sunlight. Frowning at having lost all of his free time, he started the long trudge back to the school.
