It had been quite the challenge for him. A true test of his data and his ability to sneak about in order to get good research on his subjects unnoticed. Only, he wasn’t out for information tonight. He was out in order to make something for someone. If he got information out of the interaction, that was a bonus. Besides, it would give him the opportunity to get up close and personal with the subject of most of his secretive studies. He was going to have face to face time with a honest to goodness vampire. He was eager beyond all logic and wished that he could record this meeting for later analysis.
The science lab was quiet at 3 in the morning. He expected that. He also expected that it wouldn’t have half the equipment that he had at his own personal one. But it would be rather suspect to request Tesla machines and particle condensers for a high school science laboratory. He would have to make due. He was rather good at MacGyvering it as it was. Now all he had to do was wait and hope he didn’t get stood up.
Ambling down the hallway at his own pace, Yuushi extended his telepathy out, scanning the rooms and surrounding areas. It was rather like flexing a muscle, exercising it to expand his limits, and he was getting considerably better at it. Five years ago he could only hear thoughts if he was in the same room as someone, and ten years back he would have had to have direct contact. Practice made perfect.
And the thoughts of scientific machinery and inventories of the chemistry lab nearby could only belong to Inui-kun. The telepath's lips quirked up into a small smirk. It would be...interesting, to say the least, sharing some time with a human. He slipped into the room silently, eyeing the dark haired boy as he came up behind him. "Inui-kun, I presume?" he murmured into the other's ear.
Those were among only the surface of those thoughts. Thoughts that were constant and unending about so many subjects and so much information. It was a complete system overload at nearly all times. It was the reason why he was still awake and fully functional at that hour of the night when all good little humans were tucked away in their beds. In their beds and not about to meet the enemy. Not that this was to be his enemy. To Inui, there was nothing like that. They were subjects. It was best to remain neutral and not allow personal feelings to taint the data.
Nor did he allow surprise to show. A breath rushing against his ear was enough to nearly send a chill up his spine and he heard the tell tale sounds of someone from Osaka in that too smooth voice. Stoically, he adjusted his glasses and turned in order to get a look at his guest. “You would be correct in that assumption. And I can take it that you would be Oshitari.” It was not a question but a statement of fact. “You’re right on time.”
"That's unusual. I'm typically 'fashionably late'," the vampire chuckled, sliding into a nearby seat to observe the other student. After a moment of taking Inui in from head to foot with only the barest of glances, he took a curious look into the human's mind.
And after only a few seconds, found it to be very much like standing under a waterfall. Thought after random thought pelted him, and at such a chaotic speed that he had to instinctively block it out. The effect was almost dizzying, even though it ha only taken a matter of seconds. He had to slip his glasses off briefly to rub the bridge of his nose.
So much for finding out what the human's first impressions of him were. Placing his glasses back onto his nose, he looked up and smiled. "So...am I getting a demonstration, or would you like me to assist?"
Inui was studying the vampire even as he was being studied. Mannerisms. Facial expressions. He concluded that this vampire possessed a very formidable poker face and that it was hard for him to conclude what the other thought of him. He wouldn’t waste his time either. He could gather his data in other ways. Instead he rose and went over to pull on the lab coat. All he needed was the goggles and the lightening in the back ground and the cadaver on a slab to complete the look.
“I am a big believer in hands on demonstrations as a way to check on learning. I am relatively certain, within a 89 percent margin, that you are competent as you claim to be with this equipment. So I wouldn’t mind the help at all.” He then went over to the board and picked up some chalk and started to write. It was quick and rather messy. A complex chemical equation forming under his fingers, the likes of which was really past their supposed age group. “This is what I purpose for us to make.”
"Only 89 percent, hm?" Yuushi's voice was laced with amusement, watching as Inui drew out the equation. It certainly wasn't high school level, that much was apparent. "Mm. Just one benign little step above being a bomb, I see," he drawled, unfolding from the chair to come beside the other, drawing out an almost identical equation alongside it in his own elegant looking scrawl.
"But then again, what isn't?" he concluded with a sharp little smile, glancing over
He hiked an eyebrow and felt something strange bubbling up. Laughter? Odd. He wasn’t one that found many things to be funny and when he did, he certainly didn’t chuckle about them. But there he was, letting the mirth take him. It had been the right thing, coming here to experience life of a normal high school boy. It was another feeling of amusement that took over when he saw that the other was writing. “Indeed. Just one step is all anything needs. Just about anything can be an explosive, if handled wrong.” He should know. He had had many a failed experimental prototype weapon blow up in his face.
“That’s quite good.” He observed. “You indeed grasp the concept.” He turned back to the equipment. “So,” He rolled up his sleeves and pushed his glasses up, making them shine quite eerily. “Let’s begin. We’ll make something that will make your room tolerable once again.”
"I did say it was one of my favorite subjects," Yuushi smiled, following him back to the lab setup. "Though if we wanted to make my room tolerable, the bomb might be a better bet," he quipped. He truly did not want to spend the rest of the school term staying in Niou's head anymore than he had to. He had to stay on his toes in order to make sure Niou's retaliations didn't succeed. Yet.
Moving to the sink, he briskly washed his hands before locating some latex gloves. He pulled them on as he wandered back to Inui. "Shall I measure the distilled water?"
Inui almost said that he could arrange that. Almost. It would not do to let this vampire know that he was in touching distance of one of the Hunters that were also on campus. It was just better to be Inui Sadaharu, mild mannered science geek, not brilliant vampire killing weapon smith. “You did at that. And I can see that you and he are not the most idea of matches. It makes me wonder what sort of roommate will end up with me. However, as I don’t wish to blow up the school before I manage to shatter the grading curve completely, we’ll have to pass on that.” He quipped, smiling just slightly and starting to turn on the burners and prepare the flasks. “You may. I will start getting these burners to the precise temperature.”
"So long as you're only setting your sights on shattering the Day Classes grade curve," Yuushi smiled, efficiently--and somehow elegantly--rinsing out a beaker and measuring the distilled water into it. Like most of his immediate family, he'd been privately tutored and home schooled in more subjects than he could name since he'd been able to talk. He wasn't going to have to try to pass his academic classes, at least. Without asking, he began to measure out other ingredients and substances while Inui worked, preparing them.
“I have already been informed that there is no way that I will be allowed to attend Night Classes, so I think your class standing is safe enough from me.” He was rather impressed though, by how elegant and efficiently Oshitari worked. It was like he was some artist instead of a mad scientist such as himself. Inui didn’t think the elegant vampire would ever be caught dead yelling “it’s alive” at the top of his lungs while laughing maniacally.
“It’s a real pity to, as I’m sure your classes are just as edifying as mine.” Though unlike Yuushi, Inui hadn’t had private classes like that. He had just been naturally brilliant. One of those rare child geniuses. He hadn’t had many peers like himself, so he found it rather fun to be like this now. He found the smile growing more, even as he started to measure ingredients as well. “I can make this scentless, but you seem the type to enjoy the aroma of roses. Would you like me to add that to this as well in the finishing stages.” It was an educated guess from what little data he did have. A shot in the dark.
The vampire blinked and glanced over at him. "I see...do I give off the image of a romantic hero...or a grandiose narcissist?" His eyebrow rose well over his glasses, but he was more amused than anything.
The scientist was attempting to peg him down. How...cute.
It was what Inui did. He did it very well actually. Data didn’t lie and it had never failed him before. Every little bit counted. Even if he reaped it though the painful attempts of trail and error. Lightly, he tapped his chin in thought. “If I was going to give a less than educated guess from barely knowing you for a day, I would say that you fit directly into the first category. For one, a narcissist would never allow his handwriting to look like that.” He gestured back to the board. “He would also not wish to get his hands dirty helping me out, but would rather observe and reap the benefits with as little effort possible. Of course, that is only one opinion on it. I don’t have enough data to say for any certainty.” He didn’t like to admit that either. It was a sin, to admit he didn’t know or wasn’t quite sure about something. Not when he prided himself on being informed and accurate.
"I wouldn't worry about having certainty about personality disorders," Yuushi commented. "They tend to vary from person to person, at any rate. No two narcissists would be alike. Rather like snowflakes," he laughed softly. Psychology was his true passion, after all.
"What would you say, however, if I told you that those thoughts did cross my mind?" he wondered aloud.
There was the slightest frown and an adjustment of his glasses. Stumped. A bad sign. When it came to social phenomenon, Inui was at a loss. He could pigeon hole a great many people, but even he came across a square peg that refused to be categorized by him. People like Gakuto…and they ended up getting seven notebooks dedicated to them just because of that. “Only, it’s not an accurate comparison, as science has recently discovered that among smaller snow crystals, there can be a small percent chance that there are two flakes alike.” Only for the sake of academic argument, not to one up Oshitari in the slightest. He didn’t want to alienate what might be his second friend at this school.
“And I would say that my data is rarely incorrect. But when it does prove to be, then I endeavor to correct it to reflect the facts.” He answered and held his hand out a little. “Magnesium…”
"Ah, but is that percentage by design, or random abnormality?" Yuushi posed to him as he handed over the element. "That's the question. Are you one for the Chaos theory, or String theory?" The first being a theory that proposed that no two outcomes were ever the same due to countless unseeable variables that constantly changed, and the second proposing that everything on a subatomic level was connected by energy 'vibrations' that constantly linked and interlinked with others, suggesting that there were no accidents in the world, only a series of seemingly unrelated events caused by said vibrations.
Simply put...did Inui believe that due to constant change, accidents were possible? Or did he believe that everything remained the same despite change and that there were no accidents? The human wasn't the only one who could feel out a person through casual conversation.
Inui saw what Oshitari was doing there. He was not blind to it. But he also welcomed it. He welcomed the chance to have such a discussion with someone without them looking like he had grown two heads. Facing an academic and intellectual equal was just so rare for him. So instead of answering right away, he took the time to gather his thoughts while starting to combine the elements at hand into a large glass beaker. As he did, he hummed in thought.
“Quantum theories of everything. Quite a quandary. I generally don’t enjoy the theoretical thought it is fun to ponder every now and again.” It was true. Inui liked facts. He liked things that could be proved or disproved. As of yet, neither theory had been proven and there were still even more floating about. “I would say a mixture of the two if that was feasible. But as that was not the question, I think I would have to pick Chaos. But only because I am aware of constantly evolving data. Time and place and situation cause variables that change the outcome. However, in the same vein, when applied to people and not physics, it’s far more difficult to pin down.” He did hope that was a satisfactory answer. Shaking his head, he smiled again, once more amused by this all.
"I like the theory of the butterfly effect, myself," Yuushi tipped his head towards Inui and smiled. "I prefer the idea that you can affect the world just by existing, that any small thing you do contributes to something else happening in the world."
Inui waved a finger at the other boy, chiding him. “Ah. But that wasn’t on your list either. However, right now, what I am doing isn’t that great. Perhaps in the future though…” He trailed off. No need to get into his pet projects. “But I’ll be wary if you decide to flap your winds in China.” He quipped. “However, that is a very romantic theory. And I see you that and raise you Heisenberg’s principle, which is the bane of those such as myself to pride ourselves in being able to lock down the facts.” He paused and shifted over. “Now, I’ll need an extra set of hands. This needs to be stirred.”
"As you wish, Sensei," Yuushi chuckled, giving him the help he needed. He considered another up on the philosophical ante, but it was apparent they could go back and forth all night. "What would you do if you had all the facts in the world?" he asked instead. "Would you not be bored with nothing else to learn?"
“Sensei?” He chuckled a little. That was a first. He’d been called many things, but not that. A part of him felt a little sad that they didn’t continue their little tête-à-tête. But their debate could continue on to other things. “What would I do? You do enjoy posing difficult questions to me, don’t you? However, I have an answer to that. Such a thing is impossible. There are always new facts to be invented and new things to learn. But if such a terrible thing happens, I would be very bored indeed. But I would just find something new to do.” He looked to the other. It was strange that the other was gathering more data than he. But the fact that the other was asking such things made Inui aware that the vampire was as interested in him as he was of the vampire.
"Quite the endless cycle, isn't it? You learn all there is about something, and then you apply it, use it to create something new. And then you have something to learn about all over again," Yuushi mused. "And such a short life to experience it all..." He glanced up at Inui at that. As a human, his lifespan was considerably shorter.
He nodded. It was just the way it was. He raised an eyebrow at the next comment. “Well, I’m afraid I’ve yet to distill the elixir of life. So the two of us will eventually be wound down in the clockwork.” He knew what the other was, but he had to play like he didn’t. Oshitari was just supposed to be a student from a different class. “But if I ever discover the secrets that Frankenstein was trying to find, you’ll be among the first to know.” Inui smiled a little, not at all bothered by such morbid thinking.
"Hoping to be a mad scientist?" Yuushi teased. "I'm not sure I'd appreciate my dead body being reanimated."
“I’m already one.” Inui did laugh then. A very purposeful laugh. It was just a shade away from the traditional mad scientist maniacal laughter. His glasses flashed in the light of the Bunsen burner and in that moment, he really did look like a true mad scientist. When he calmed, he looked to Oshitari and grinned. “But don’t worry. I won’t put your dead body on my slab. Though I might just extract your brilliant mind to reanimate my creature.” He was teasing in his own dead panned way.
Yuushi's smirk broadened into an all out grin. Oh, Inui was incredibly interesting. He was glad he'd come. "I wouldn't use my mind," he laughed. "You would only regret it when your creature wastes its time napping. I've been told I'm quite the lazy ass."
So he had gotten some information, after all. Even if it was something someone else said about the vampire. “I find that I have very little I regret. As you have stated, life is too short to have such feelings.” That, and facts meant that he didn’t regret much. Because he didn’t follow emotions, per say, he didn’t feel the same sensations in the normal ways. “And perhaps. You might be. But you also might only put your energy into the things you enjoy. What others see as sloth is taking your time to do it right.” He shrugged a little and started to pipe in another substance that made the green liquid boiling into a clear one.
"And here I assumed all this time that it was because I like to sleep," the vampire chimed in, amused. He watched the change curiously. "How would you suggest I utilize this formula? Drown Niou in it?" he asked a little hopefully.
“Drown? Hmmmm.” He seemed to be considering it. “I actually have something that might be even better use to you than this. This will just rid the stink from your room. If you wish to be rid of your roommate.” It was a jump. A leap of logic and a bit of an experiment. Something he had wanted to know for years. “I have this special juice…” He started and then trailed off.
Yuushi's eyes gleamed at Inui's proposal. Not that he was looking to actually damage Niou much..."So long as it doesn't kill him. Tell me more about this special juice..."
Inui tapped his fingers on the table. “It’s a health drink. But I’ve been told that it’s the most god awful tasting thing in all existence.” He went on to explain the infamous juice and what he’s seen it do to people over the years after it’s initial creation, though he didn’t give the ingredients. They were a closely guarded secret. He then went on to describe a few of the earlier experiments. The tea with the running and crying and the aozu, which made people faint from the first taste of it. There were others of course and it was always evolving as he found new very healthy things to mix together in his blender. He was sure he could make one for a vampire. “What do you think? Think he’ll go for it?” He didn’t have any data on this Niou after all. He didn’t know if the other would up and drink something that wasn’t his.
Yuushi's eyes widened bit by bit, listening to the effects of Inui's juice drinks. It sounded...cruel. Heartless. The most powerful torture that avoided any bad consequences. In short, it sounded perfect for his troublesome roommate. "He doesn't have to go for it. I'm sure I could slip it to him in some way.."
He was a scientist. He had no heart. And if he did, it was a thing made of clockwork and chemicals. Which was why when he was over, he had to admit that he didn’t think it was all that bad. He thought it tasted perfectly fine. But he had been accused of having no taste buds. “Then I will make sure that perhaps this weekend, you get a bit of my newest batch. I will have to do some tweaking to make it extra healthy.” In short, he had to make it so that a vampire could drink it. “And now, would you like the scent or not, as this is the step where it needs to be added.”
"Unless you can duplicate the smell of a library, then no," Yuushi shook his head. He was already calculating how he could feed the juice to Niou. Swap out his drinks? Simply pour it down his throat as he slept? Ah, so many choices...
“I wish I could.” He mused. He was rather fond of that scent too. “Then I shall leave it scentless.” He started to pour the last few ingredients in and then turned the burner on as low as it could go without going out. “I have a little spray bottle you can put this in for your use.”
"Shall I disperse it into the air? Using it on fabric might not be the best idea..." Yuushi considered out loud.
Inui nodded. “I wouldn’t advise using it directly on fabric.” He didn’t know what the chemicals would do if directly introduced to fabric. It might be a fun experiment for a day when he was bored out of his mind. “So just spray it in the air.” He turned the burner off finally and then looked at his watch. “It will need to cool a little more. Until then, you might perhaps explain to me more of why you don’t like your roommate. Is it purely incongruent personalities, or is there for to it?” He didn’t know how vampire hierarchies and dynamics worked other than the fact that Pure Blood was basically a deification and Level E were monsters who lost their sanity and humanity and needed eradicated….or studied.
"We took a mutual dislike to each other, that's all," Yuushi told him. "He is, to put it kindly, a pig. He doesn't like me either. Most likely because he never wanted a roommate, and I do not put up with his garbage or his behaviour," the vampire shrugged. "I doubt there is much more to it." It certainly had nothing to do with their rankings. In that, they were somewhat equal. And Yuushi didn't care about things like that, to some extent.
“Ii data.” He muttered to himself. So vampires had the same human failings as humans. It was actually rather strange. The more he researched, the more he had discovered the many similarities. In fact the differences were very few, though those differences were huge. “And I see. Having someone so opposite of you suddenly invade what has been your private space would be a bit unnerving. But you are correct in your actions as well. It was not your choice to be put them him.” He paused and then sighed. “I suppose eventually, I will be in the same boat. When that happens, I’ll be sure to keep my clutter of books and notes to my side of the room.”
"You have a more refined sense of self preservation, then," Yuushi drawled, amused. Satisfied with this meeting, he skirted the table and leaned close to Inui. "So...did you collect enough data on me, Inui-kun?"
Inui didn’t know about that. He was sure some day his hobby was going to come back and bite him on the ass. Probably most literally. He shook his head a little to rid himself of that thought. He didn’t realize until too late that the vampire was even closer to him. A part of him wanted to reach out and push those full lips up to see if the fangs were something permanent. He forced that down. There was curiosity and then there was outright reckless stupidity. He wouldn’t show his hand so soon. Instead, he just calmly poured the contents into the bottle and answered as blandly as he could. “Enough to start at least. I’m sure there is far more to you than one meeting can provide to me. And you, did I provide you with the adequate amount of information.”
"Oh, you did," Yuushi assured him, leaning close enough to see Inui's eyes behind the glasses. "You are a fascinating individual, Inui-kun," he murmured. "I may have to meet with you more often," he smiled.
Eyes were the window to the soul and Inui’s green tented myopic ones were most expressive indeed. It was why he had never opted for contacts and kept with the coke bottles. He tried not to be bothered by such closeness and such intrusion into his most secret of worlds, but he knew the threat he was feeling would be there. He tried to force it down with logic. Oshitari was no threat. He just had to keep telling himself this, as he had no true data to back it up except for this one meeting. “You are rather an interesting subject as well.” He managed before he had regained his equilibrium. “I don’t think I would mind breaking curfew again to gather more data on you.” He would deal with the guardians if he was ever caught in the act.
"Likewise..." Yuushi's hand curled around the spray bottle as he stepped another inch closer to drop a small kiss on Inui's chin. Let the scientist figure out why. "If you hurry, they won't catch you now," he told the human, slipping away with his bottle. "I will be seeing you, Inui-kun."
System overload. Processing found in error…Shutting down. Inui sat there a moment, completely dumbfounded by that. He sat there, brain a total blue screen of death. For once in his life, his mind had shut down. …..Rebooting… Though it didn’t stay that way long. He stood abruptly and forced himself not to start asking all sorts of question that had nothing to so with string theory and odor eliminating spray at all. But he couldn’t. Instead, he quickly put everything back, erased the board and started out as well. He needed to get back to his dorms and write everything down. Oshitari Yuushi had just earned his first notebook.
