Just finished reading Directors in Rehearsal by Susan Letzler Cole. I've been reading this book for too goddamn long; but, oh, it's so wonderful. Seriously. Let me share a few things with you:
"On some level, one can only direct a play in the teeth of the kind of thing a play is -- or at least, in the teeth of the kind of reading a play invites."
"I knew that who he is as a man and an artist would influence the production in that it would be humanized by his 'form and pressure'.... For me the best work comes when the actor has a sense of ownership, responsibility for the work."
"The directorial gaze that I observe in rehearsal is...not that of longing or desire, but of absorption in and detachment from the other, as if the viewer is inside and outside what is viewed. Not easily categorizable, it is what I have called the 'maternal gaze' in it's ideal aspect. Neither purely voyeuristic nor purely possessive, it is a taking in and letting go."
"The director's purpose is to create a condition which leads another [the actor] to a new experience; a thousand times it won't work, but once it will, and that once is enough."
And all sorts of other things. Jesus; this stuff sets me on fire. The ability to set others on fire sets me on fire. FIYA FIYA.
Home is nice. It is wonderful in a lot of ways. I'm hoping I don't fuck up my job. I need to talk to Andy -- the artistic director of Cripple Creek Theatre Co. -- about investing in a stage manager, a real one.
There are some shining moments in my life which are enough to make everyday life an enjoyable kind of livable. Being home is enough.
Gonna read Steve Reich's Writings on Music: 1965 -- 2000 BOOYA
