Fuck Peter Gabriel.

1. Nine Times Blue -the Monkees

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgvfMy9UEuo

It starts about 1:30 in, but the whole video's worth watching. My favorite version is the demo found on the bonus tracks of Headquarters, however.

2. Nobody's Fault But My Own -Beck

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBFBLZodiYI

This particular performance gives me chills...man.

3. I Want You Back -the Jackson 5

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfJu_Bom2sA

I mean, come on.

4. Ain't Too Proud To Beg -the Temptations

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9qUZHIpJAw

I should probably make it a more evenly-spread list but y'know what? Motown did it right.

5. So Sad About Us -the Who

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WeBTWEFn_M

Always had a very soft spot in my heart for this one. The lyrics certainly leave a lot for the imagination, but what good pop song doesn't?

1) Reconsider Me, Mr Zevon.

The best example of contrition in popular music that I can think of. "Let's let bygones be forgotten.....reconsider me." I've wanted to send this to folks in the past. Never did! Maybe I should have.

This is not the original version; it's a cover by Steve Earle, backed by the band Reckless Kelly. I should rectify this.

2) Thirsty Dog, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

This is very much "I'm drunk sitting on your doorstep, let me in, you know you love me...." sorry.

3) Bring it on home to me, Sam Cooke

First heard this covered by the Von Bondies, with Marci Bolen singing out. Sam Cooke, however, is a better singer than Marci is.

4) Howlin' Wolf, Change My Way

There's not a ton of Wolf video on youtube, and thus not a ton of audio, either. However, the lyrics are as follows:

I'm got to change my way of livin', this life I'm livin' ain't no good
I'm got to change my way of livin', this life I'm livin' ain't no good
I leave home in the morning, don't come back 'til the break of dawn

My baby said that ain't right, I'll admit that is true
My baby said that ain't right, I'll admit that is true
She said daddy, daddy, you got to change the way you do

You know I leave in the mornin', and I don't come back 'til dawn
You know I leaves in the mornin', and I don't come back 'til dawn
My baby looked me in the eyes, and said daddy, you got to change your evil way

5) Stupidity, Detroit Cobras

A Solomon Burke original. Even if it's not strictly about reconciliation, referencing your lack of sense and intelligence is never a bad move when looking to return to the good graces of a lover.

Sorry about the week-long hiatus, guys. I guess we all decided to take a Spring Break. I'm starting back up tomorrow, and I hope my fellow ESixers start again this week, too.
