Argh! I've been trying to figure out what instrument makes the "whooping" sound in Paul Simon's song, "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard" and the theme music for the British series, Queer As Folk. A local music shop suggested maybe it was a vibraphone, so I've been Googling around that word and "arrangement" and "instrument" and "distinctive" and-- well, lots of things.
So where do I finally come up with a description of the cuica? The Queens University Belfast, on a School of Anthropological Studies page.
It's such a small world, or as Stewart says in Queer As Folk, "my world is so fuckin' huge!"
Oh and hey, I hear on the BBC that a group called "Battle for the Boyne" is playing on the historic battle to raise awareness of pollution issues at the "heritage site" and say they're taking the opportunity to dispell myths about area history.
Oops, forgot to post this last night. More synchronicity smacked me this morning, though, as I hit "play" again on BBC Radio Ulster in Realplayer: A song called "Getting it Right Next Time" came on, and I was curious about it; looking up Gerry Rafferty, who the announcer said sang it, I get a
page full of references to Billy Connoly (whose movie, "The Man Who Sued God" I have queued up on the laptop) and Rafferty's album called "Snakes and Ladders" (the name of a new CBC show I'll be watching tonight)... that's enough Google for me, now. My head's spinning!
