Day four in Chihuahua

Jun 20, 2010 08:42

After having breakfast, we headed to Cuautémoc City (90 kilometers away from Chihuahua). The journey is fantastic as you can see the mountains and hills of what is called “Sierra”. The ground around the highway is dry and brown, but the mountains already had green spots.
First we stopped at a town called Sta. Isabel. There we tried some delicious ice popsicles. The history of the business is amazing. They are only open during the hot season. The owners are only sisters and they are the ones that prepare and sell the product. They have been opened for fifty years. The flavors are traditional, but the one that is a must-try is the avocado one. I ate one of hazelnut and the other, of course, avocado. The weather was hot and those cold popsicles were really welcome. I was also told that this town was an important site for Pancho Villa, he had a camping site here, because of the water springs. It was also mentioned that properties here are expensive because of those springs and the benefit they do to the farming areas around the small town.

After some more driving, we got to the outskirts of Cuautémoc City. We entered the Mennonite region by driving on its main street. It is like jumping from Mexico to the USA but with German ads read everywhere.
The first stop was the Mennonite House of Culture. It has the shape of a typical house and in the inside there’s an amazing collection of daily life objects. These objects have been preserved and come from the 1920’s when 7,000 Mennonites travelled to Mexico from Manitoba in Canada. We all learnt a lot from the museum.
The Next stop was a green house, run by a Mennonite family. It has everything you can imagine, from vegetables to fruits to flowers. The flowers were blooming, so the sight was fantastic!
Finally, we got to the desired stop: “Los Arcos” pizza place. We were really hungry and despite the fact it was full of people, we got in, take a table and ordered some pizza: Mexican, Special and Shrimp. While we were waiting for our order, we talked about how the Mennonite dress and how the follow their traditions. We also pointed out that the restaurant has two rooms: one special for other Mennonites and another for regular costumers. When the pizzas hit the table, I took a picture and then we ate as much as we could. Any way, we left some slices and took them back home along with another pizza (which we’ll eat on Sunday).

After eating we stopped at the kid’s section for my niece to have some fun. Suddenly it started raining and we decided to head back home. It rained all the way back (and it was really heavy and cold rain) until we got home.

When we got home, we were really tired, except for Frida. We played with her a little bit but at around 21:30 hrs we went to sleep.

Here there are some pictures, the rest will be on Facebook.
