This is a drama I watched recently which I enjoyed very much, based on a book by 李碧华 Li Bi Hua. Also previously a movie produced back in 1989 staring Gong Li and Zhang Yi Mou. Although in all reality, I skipped through/fast forwarded most parts while studying, hehe, and only went back to certain scenes when I had time. This has in fact become my style of drama-watching in the last couple of years to save time.
The plot is set in 3 eras - Qin dynasty, the time of Emperor Qin Shi Huang; 1930s nearing the Japanese occupation; 2015 modern times. It describes a group of people (the focus being the main 4 characters) connected by their karma/fate as they continue to meet in their future lives, in other words, to carry on with unfinished business. In the center of it all is the myth of the longevity potion that the 'bad guys' (including the Emperor back in his days) are trying to get their hands on. All their 3 lives revolve around this searching.
Luo Kai Ping (in picture order)
This guy is handsome *_* I think he looks best in the dynasty era!
He was the high ranking general of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, with 100% loyalty to his people and country. He was also involved in the building of 始皇陵 Shi Huang Ling, the Emperor's burial 'empire' that we now know as the Terracotta Army. Both he and the emperor falls in love with 冬儿 Dong Er, who I will introduce later, but she only has eyes for him. Involved in all this is also 美姜 Mei Jiang who has a continuing destiny with the Emperor in their subsequent lives. Anyway, to cut the long story of 20+ episodes short, Emperor Qin goes into frenzy when he finds out about their relationship and true to his ruthless image in history, orders Meng Tian Fang to be sculptured into a Terracotta Warrior ALIVE (clay, fire and all) destined to guard his tomb for all eternity. Just before the punishment, Dong Er pops the longevity pill she stole into his mouth and she runs into the fire. Hence, the legend of the '活人俑 Living Terracotta Warrior'.
Xu Xiao Jing
Period costumes do not fit her. I think she was prettiest in the 2015 time.
She will be the love interest of the same guy for all 3 lives. Their interactions are so so cute. And in all 3 lives, the Emperor will kind of like her too, which is bad bad bad. She will hold the key to a lot of the secrets surrounding the longevity pill myth. Other characters will find themselves reborn into their same circle of events.
Personally I think the 2015 plot was best. It was the most interesting and funny and had the most of their interactions as they fell in love with each other once again. However, the Qin era scenes were the most poignant and it set the pace for the rest of the series beautifully. The 1930s was ehem, boring. It was interesting to watch the connection between all three lives, but this era in particular caused quite a bit of confusion. For example, it's still unknown whether Meng Tian Fang did live on for 2000 years. As always, I guess it's up for interpretation.
天上星星千千万万,只要记住一颗就够了;
Tens and thousands stars in the sky, to remember only one is great enough;
Tens and thousands girls in this world, to fall in love with one is great enough.
Even if two thousand years have passed, I will still remember you, I will fall deeply in love with you.
These 2 quotes will sum up their love story nicely. They connect their lives together and join their relationship across time. Both Meng Tian Fang and Luo Kai Ping will subconsciously, somewhere deep in their memories, blurt out the same lines to Dong Er/Xiao Jing. Not the most marvelous script or production, but good enough to be entertained.
