The bad news is that SB's mother died suddenly during our London visit. It's hard to describe the emotional impact of this. The logistical impact is that we bought last-minute tickets round-trip between London and Louisville, KY in order to organize and participate in her funeral. I arrived home on a completely uneventful flight from Indianapolis Wednesday afternoon. I didn't really try to see any friends (sorry guys) because it seemed like family needed all my time, and when they didn't need me, I needed to be alone to recover. That part wasn't a big surprise.

( My brother and I stayed five days and helped clean out Grandmother's apartment. )

Grandmother passed away Saturday afternoon while I was at Pike's Peak Writers Conference. It happened much more suddenly than anyone was expecting. She'd been moved from the hospital to hospice less than 24 hours previously ( Read more... )

It seems unlikely now that I will get to see Grandmother. Her health plummeted today, and in the afternoon my mom and her brothers had to give the word on whether "extreme measures" (in this case, a ventilator) would be used. Grandmother was adamant that she did not want that, and they respected her wishes ( Read more... )

Grandmother's health has been in sudden, dramatic decline for the last couple of weeks. I almost jumped a plane a couple of weeks ago to get a chance to say to goodbye to her. Then she stabilized, and there was every indication that she had another good year coming. Now the bottom seems to have dropped out. She was readmitted to the hospital, and ( Read more... )
