Woot! We stumbled upon a great BBC drama when we moved to London called Being Human. It's billed as a comedy drama about a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost who share a house together. As far as I can tell, "comedy drama" in this context means, "extreme angst-ridden drama where someone occasionally says something funny." It sounds funny, and more than that, I wouldn't have expected someone to pull this premise off with a straight face. But, like Garden State, do not be fooled into thinking you're going to watch this show to laugh.
Oh, yeah, and the men are yummy. George, the socially repressed sensitive Jewish werewolf, spends half the show falling out of shirts so that you can see his magnificent chest and washboard abs. Maybe the "comedy" part is in fan service. Annie, the ghost, is cute as a button, but stays amazingly well-clothed. (This seems an interesting counterpoint to a conversation I was having with
verin_the_brown about sexualizing male and female characters.)
That said, we looked forward to watching this thing every week. So, of course, it's over, because the BBC are wankers. I mean, seriously, a six episode season? That's just long enough to be annoying. I'm not thrilled that the US has decided to drop down to funding 13-episode half-seasons. At some point, you have to trust a show and give it money to produce enough episodes to be interesting.
But I'm happy to report that Being Human will get to entertain us for another eight (eight! :-p) episodes. I have no idea when, though. Probably when we're back in the States. Ah, well :).
This thing really must make it over the pond sometime soon. Look for it. It kicks ass.
