Drag me out of the sea & then teach me to breathe, give me forced health till I wish death on myself

When he'd first found out, Logan hadn't reacted at all. He hadn't laughed like it was some kind of joke or broken down in tears. He'd simply gone quiet for a while- his eyes cold and distant, and his jaw set. He'd stayed that way for hours, and then set out into the woods ( Read more... )

Jack didn't touch Logan for a long moment, not because he didn't want to because he ached to take the younger man in his arms, but because he knew Logan and figured he needed to get the initial grief out without being restrained.

When he spoke, though, Jack moved in and took hold of his husband. He'd pushed it all down, he'd had so much practice at repressing the pain, so his own hurt wasn't for Joe because he just couldn't deal with that. It was all for Logan.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Logan," he said softly, at a total loss for what to say. Promises like that were made to be broken and Jack hoped that the island wouldn't make a liar of him eventually...or of Logan. He couldn't stand losing Logan.

His hands were dirty from where they'd hit the ground, but Logan didn't notice as he turned and wrapped his arms around Jack, holding on as if the island might take him away next.

Words failed him, and Logan was silent as he clutched the other man's shirt, his fingers digging in as he inhaled sharply and struggled not to start sobbing again.

"It's not fair," he said finally, his voice low and hollow.

"No. I know. No, it's not," he said as he held Logan tightly, making sure he felt the strength and resolve in Jack that would keep him here. He wished that wanting to stay was really all it took.

"I've got you," he added, kissing Logan's hair. So long as he focused all his attention on Logan he didn't feel anything of the loss himself. And he was good with that.

"Promise you wont leave too," he said quietly. "Say it. Promise me right now, 'cause... Cause I can't lose you too, okay?"

Losing Joe had hurt, but with Jack here he had a reason to keep going. If he Lost that, Logan knew he'd never survive.
