The UK singles chart used to mean something, having a number one was THE benchmark, that was the goal...along with appearing on Top of the Pops. At least when I was 16 and dreamt of such things.
I heard Umbrella for the first time yesterday. It's been at
number one for 9 weeks apparently. I didn't know.
Now either I have been living under a rock and all this has passed by in front of my nose or the singles chart is very broken these days. It used to be everywhere, tv, newspapers, can't say I listen to much radio, but that just highlights my point...you didn't need to listen to Radio 1 in the daytime. You osmatically knew who was at number one. When Bryan Adams was at number one with that wretched wretched song or Whitney Houston's abominable cover I was sick of them both, to the point where I hope to never hear either ever again. Today after 9 weeks I hear a song for the first time. What happened?
