How unusual yet interesting. Does such a hat serve a purpose? Or is it simply for intimidation?

Well, we had one at school that was enchanted. It sorted us into our houses. A brilliant hat.

And the hat my professor wears...it's certainly intimidating. I'm not sure if it has any practical purposes, though.

An intelligent hat? I have never heard of such a thing before. I was not even aware hats could be sentient.

Well, the Sorting Hat has been enchanted. If you removed all the spells on it it would just be a normal hat. Although it's been sentient for so long that it would probably retain at least some of its intelligence.

I'm sure it can, although all I've ever seen it do is sort people. It can also recite poems, which I assume it writes itself.
