Hahahaha. Well, today was a good day at work until the very end, although even though it flustered me a bit, and even agitated me a touch, apparently I never stopped smiling, and got all kinds of compliments from all of my customers who had to wait for this one....
Interested?
Here's what happened: Lady comes in, tosses a couple lottery tickets (scratch-it variety) on the counter. I'm used to this, no biggie. Lady looks like she's in her mid-20s, and company policy is card if they appear under 30. So I ask for her ID. She proceeds to get incredibly angry, and reaches across the counter, and starts cursing up a storm (I remember vividly, along the lines 'are you fucking kidding me? I'm 33, and for goddamn lottery tickets? What the' and then she was out of earshot) -- she stormed out of the store after grabbing her tickets and driving off. Customers behind her shook their head, and gave the first compliments on how well I handled it (I was still smiling when she left and I had apologized a couple times, and thanked her for dropping by as she left...which likely pissed her off even more.
So I helped some more customers, which is something I seem to be naturally good at -- the lady came back a little later, drove up, slammed her car door, for a second I thought she almost threw the store's front door out of its hinges, or close to it -- but she didn't. She stormed up to the counter, broke in line, and then threw her lottery tickets down (a bit harder than before) and then flung her ID across the counter. I smiled apologetically to the lady now behind her, who shrugged and gave me the universal 'who knows, don't worry about it' expression, so I welcomed the lady back, kept smiling, and helped her (She had two scratch tickets that were winners, 7 and 4 dollars, respectively.) She bought more lottery, and seemed frustrated, but less angry when she left.
My customers behind her seemed sympathetic towards me and it was funny as hell, because now the next 5-7 people in line (I was alone, it was busy and there were complicated transactions that involved void receipts and lottery changes-of-mind) had their ID out before I could ask them, buying beer and cigarettes. I found that rather amusing. I'm more pleased with myself than worried about it, especially since my manager rocks -- she's constantly telling us that she will always back us up if a customer has an issue with us carding them -- it is our job on the line, after all.
Other than that, today was pretty good, and I feel even better now that I'm at home. Yay home!
