Well, I went to a game show for the first time in my life, since a friend got free tickets (and gave me and my wife some). There were... lots of otakus there. So, what was it like?
1. There were tons of people. TONS of people. Popular booths had lots and lots of people lined up, so if you wanted to try out the newest Square/Enix game, for example, you would have to wait 90 minutes or so.
2. One booth was going to give free DS games out (trial/special versions), but the massive people who lined up for this apparently scared them, and they cancelled at the last minute. However, the people who lined up for this STILL STAYED THERE until the game show ended, and even after! I wonder what happened after (did they get the games after all? Did they destroy the booth?).
3. There were lots of models strutting about, and smiling for the otakus who wanted to take their pictures (multiple times). They looked to be about 70 or so in terms of IQ.
4. There were tons of cosplayers in between the two buildings where the show was held, and lots of otakus were taking their pictures as well.
5. Once it was finally over, we left - but so did the gazillion otakus who also went to the show, making trying to buy train tickets to get back really difficult, not to mention the act of just leaving! Unfortunately, this is life in Japan...
Final Fantasy IV (the DS remake) looks pretty cool - I guess I want to buy this game... The Square/Enix booth had a huge inflated slime, which was cool - they also had a huge inflated chocobo, but I hate the neotenized, "super-deformed" yellow birds. In fact, I hate all cutesy, toddler characters, the like of which seems to exist in nearly all Japanese RPGs...
