i said brrrr!

i don't normally bitch about the cold (unlike the thermometer in my car this morning that told me that making it read 0 this morning was cruel and unusual), but the draft from window inmy office across my hands is brutal. i'm thinking that someone forgot insulation in these outer walls.

but yep, it is definitely january around here. and once again, as much as i have always loved my equine beasties, i'm so glad i don't have horses to muck out after and break ice for and mix hot mash. then i would get cranky about the whether.

instead, i am cranky about work. so cranky i can't even begin to describe. aren't you all lucky?

~.~.~.~

my DVR finally crapped out on me last night. nothing on it that i can't download, but i went ahead and ordered a new onethis morning. i have plenty of jdramas and other such goodies on the computer to keep me busy -- should i actually have a minute to sit still and think of watching tv.

dangermousie has convinced me to download another j-drama that i had been eying as a possibility after the 50 or so i have waiting to be viewed. and then there is the BBC costume line up with Cranford, and the 2007 versions of Persuasion, Northanger Abbey and Mansfieled Park, and as of yesterday, first episode of the new Sense and Sensibility.

Cranford - the cast alone make you realize you will not see another BBC costume drama for the next 5 years as their budget has been blown. seriously, Judi Dench on top of it all? it is a fabulous cornucopia of spotting your favorite actors from prior BBC dramas, and there is even a "Gaskell hat-trick" appearance. And Gaskell's stories do not disappoint. i'd watched the first episode on thanksgiving with the parents (mom requested a DVD of the whole thing for yule) and have only been able to get back to watching it this week as i'm on the treadmill. i did not see the ending of the second episode coming in any way shape or form, and promptly burst into tears last night at the twist in the storyline. it did not help my cranky mood.

Persuasion i've only caught a few minutes of as i checked the download. i'm not sure about the actors, because after the 90s version with Amanda Root and Cairan Hinds as absolute walk-off-the-page perfection, it should not have been touched. i'm not impressed with Wentworth so far -- too young and pretty. and boring.

Mansfield Park - if i make it through watching this one, it will be a miracle. the few minutes i've seen already have made me want to stab my eyes out. thank you, Billie Piper. I hate you please go away now, and most especially, stay away from all period pieces! gah! the only thing that might increase its train-wreck value is that in the less than 60 seconds i watched of the Crawford siblings appearance on screen, it is clear the screenwriter and director are taking all those incest undertones and attaching them to a sledgehammer. in a creepy and highly disturbing way. not that the whole incest theme isn't creep and disturbing on it's own, but usually it is played with a bit more camp. dead-on seriousness kinda leaps over that line into incredibly squicky.

Northanger Abbey - i can't remember ever seeing an adaptation of this, and barely remember the book as it was so long ago i read it, but i remember it is bit more dark and foreboding. and the few minutes of this i've seen so far definitely have a sinister edge to it, so it looks quite promising.

Sense & Sensibility - okay, i watched nothing but the first few minutes last night, and omg, opening with Willoughby seducing Eliza in firelight and sex? take away my prim and proper Jane Austen fan club card, but i love it.

all of this makes me think i am long over-do for a full on JA reread. i just wish i could figure out when to fit that in to my life.
