My oh my I got a car.
Beater. No doubt. Beaten up, manual transmission, 1992 Honda Civic. It definitely doesn't have too much power, it struggles up the hills. But it sure feels cool to drive. It's my first manual car ever. I paid $550 for it, from a family of locals who was moving off of the island. I think I might do a couple cheap things to try and boost the engine performance, but so far I'm really pleased with it. Hopefully it keeps trukin along for the entire time I'm here.
The family really kind of took a huge leap of faith with me. They accepted part of the money, then waited for me to leave and transfer them the rest from my online account at home. I mean, I honored their trust, so it's all good. Actually it's all great. They kind of eggagerated how good the engine is, but the brakes are good, and the front two tires are practically new.
But when I say it's a beater, I MEAN it. Cracked winshield, dents and scratches ALL over the body, stereo taken out, no dashboard lights, no right rear view mirror, No handles for the window cranks in the back. But you know what? It runs, it doesn't let water in, it was cheap, and so far I love it.
Although my dad resisted the idea of me getting a car, after I got it, he was completely supportive. He and I went out and he taught me to drive it in this huge parking lot next to the ocean. It was one of those classic father son bonding experiences, and I have to say, it was pretty great. I enjoyed it, and I really think he did too. It's like, a perfect example of the things I came to Hawaii to do. We then watched the surfers, and watched the sunset on the beach, and then headed home.
If I can keep this us, this dragging him out of the house, things may well be looking up. I've kind of had to push him to go for the past two days, but he sure loves it after we do. He drinks less beer, he unwinds more, and we get along a whole lot better. Spending time with him isn't difficult, but really pretty neat in times like that. And even after we get home, he seems a lot happier and doesn't seem to resent it when I go hang out with Bill and Dennis (which is where I am now).
Also, my knee is healing well, and as soon as it's closed up nicely, I'll be back out on those waves in no time. I'm ready to hit the surf board again, and I'll be catchin some pipe in no time. Let's just hope I can catch it while avoiding stretches of lava rock. That's not quite so forgiving. As a sidenote, my new car let's me lower the seat, and I can totally fit a surfboard in there!
