Holy crap. I'm not a roadie in the least- more like a former messenger who still rides his fixed gear around town from time to time, partly because it's fun to pass the weekend warrior Lycra bros on their Litespeeds, and partly because it's just a lot of fun anyway; and to top that off, when I do manage to get out and ride, weather and work permitting, I primarily mountainbike; but I am looking to get into road riding (and grammar be damned in this post)- but I know beautiful bikes when I see them.

I may be acquiring an early 1980s Gitane, all original Campy parts, for a song very soon. I'm also looking into a late 1970s Fuji race bike with Campy parts and a Pinarello cyclocross bike from the early 1980s. I have the opportunity to get them all for far less than they are worth, and they will all fit me (I take anywhere in the range of 52-54cm) , so I may just do it, even though I am just about out of room for my bike stable.

I'm also trying to build up a singlespeed rigid mountainbike from an old Schwinn Mountaineer frame that I have had for a while. I've run into problems with the length of the chain, although I think if I throw a regular bmx chain on it and use a half link to take up the slack I will be fine. My dream is to build a fixed gear mountainbike, but that frame and the accompanying parts are quite a while away.

You wouldn't happen to know anyone who would want a hardtail downhill/freeride bike with a dualcrown fork with 6.25" of travel, would you? Personally, I hate rear suspension (I think it's a cop-out for the majority of people who a- never rode bmx, b- can't land jumps, or c- both) and only have hardtail frames. I am willing to part it out (2002 KHS Bitch dirtjumping/freeride frame with 2002 Bombshell Bad Betty fork, mix of XT and XTR components, Evil chainguide, Intense lock on grips, SDG saddle, 8" Hayes hydro in the front and XT V in the rear) but would prefer to sell the bike as a whole.

If nothing else, I can keep the rims, swap out new hubs (I would prefer King hubs if I could find some way to swing it), and bastardize a lot of the other components and just try to sell the frame and fork.

well in reply to this very educated comment, i must say i dont know any one off hand that might want it but my best advice to perhaps put it on the bay. although i might know a few people since freeriding is very common now in chicago. i love riding my roadies, and they treat me very well. the one mountain looking bike is actually my commuter. it has an old campy crank, and two 700c wheels with a freewheel set up. the cross tires on there do though give off a mixed message and it does have full fenders and a rack. its a nice little ride that will be a single speed in the summer.
