Here's my open letter to the St. Pete Times because I am bored and annoyed... that's a dangerous mix.
Why do you still print the comic, Family Circus? I know they've tried to modernize their humor by using buzzwords such as "Google", "Hybrid" and "HD", but it's still so old-fashioned and almost painful to read. Some might describe it as "timeless" and "wholesome", but I would call it "stale" and "lame". I realize that your paper is read by a wide demographic of subscribers and perhaps a few of them get a chuckle from it, but that seriously has to be no more than 5 people and if they fall in the demographic I think they do, they won't be subscribers much longer. Ok, that sounded pretty callous - I'll give you that. The point is, it's a waste of your ink and money to keep printing Family Circus. Please put something a little more, I don't know... provocative? stimulating? heck, even FUNNY - in its place. Trust me. No one will miss it.
This strip requires absolutely no talent or imagination whatsoever. Every installment is a vague scene that could be captioned by anything, quite frankly. I am willing to bet that many of them have been recycled over the years of this legacy of mediocrity only to be captioned by yet more drivel. I took the liberty of grabbing 7 random Family Circus comics and changing their captions to illustrate my point. This took me all of 15 minutes as it required almost no thought, talent and imagination. And dare I say, it's on par with Mr. Keane's originals. In other words, this is a week's worth of material so Bil Keane can take a vacation from his hard work!
