heylo friends,
so lets not keep you in suspense....i'm in London, Engelland (i have no idea where that crazy pronounciation comes from - it's flowing thru my head - me thinks austin powers). Arrived here from Hong Kong at 8 something london time, cutting thru fog which has at this current point in time closed down heathrow and has left many pissed off, cold people hanging out at heathrow for more than 12 hours. Glad to be lucky today.
Flight was pleasant. Sat next to this really cute korean woman (who's name translated to english means brown rice??!!), who told me i made the flight lovely....which i think was really just a bad translation cos quite frankly i'd be a bitch to sit next to on long flights. Shifting my things, etc. But yeah i think she liked me cos i can speak tiny bits of korean - hey Seongu, anyoung - ti chinesta? haha
But yeah....let's get back to Hong Kong...the home of my heart.
Left Sydney late Sunday night and due to the amount of partying, uni work and all of that, i slept very soundly thru the flight, until 3 or 4 in the morning HK time (which is like 6 or 7 Aus time), when we began landing. Hung out at the airport for about an hour or 2 until shuttles and that started heading to where i needed to go. Not really a concern for me, i just sat there reading Shantaram - one of those books you tend to get told to read from everyone.
Caught the shuttle to the hotel amongst many of my own oohs, aahs and wows. i was on this empty bus and the trip took about an hour. the sun was coming up and hong kong just radiated with this serene beauty. i know its prolly a very gen Y thing to say, but there was something beautiful about the tall buildings standing amid large mountains. A perfect blend between the old and new.
Got to the hotel in Kowloon and they took forever to check me in, but it was ok because there with Miz Wang (aka Wendy) and we had a lot too catch up on. Plus, the delay's turned out to be this massive blessing.
Turns out, Hong Kong, the home of my heart, is asleep until at least 10am with shops slowly opening until about 12am. Finally, somewhere that runs on Eb time!!!
So yeah, we went shopping, walking and sightseeing for about 13 or so hours. You see travellators and escalators everywhere and at first you wonder why, but once u realise how much walking there is to do, you understand that they are a godsend.
Got to see where Wen stayed whilst being at Poly U and she taught me little bits of canto (mmm goy is thank you). Caught the subway and its packed and exciting and i'm like the only non asian person there - the doors open at a station and with this excited/scary look wendy turns to me and goes "get out as soon possible!!" and i get this rush of fear like the doors are gonna slam shut on me or something. Turns out, there are about 150 + ppl getting off at the same time as you and if u don't rush to get on the escalators, you'll b waiting for a while on the platform.
Also, if u bump into ppl don't say sorry lol
Day 2 we woke up early (10am) and went across to Hong Kong island via the ferry. Wen thinks my canto pronouciation is good btw lol very excited about that one...
We walked thru Soho and Central - both very affluent trendy areas where there are way more white ppl. It's not that i'm racist, its just anyone who has travelled can assure you how daggy/embarrassing/stupid tourists are. i'm walking around hoping i'm not lumped in that bum bag wearing, I heart hong kong t-shirt owning group.
Wen and i went to the peak which overlooks the whole of Hong Kong (absolutely beautiful)....and then we went down and got ourselves into more shopping until 11pm at night.
And yeah, that's the short of my journey so far. I hope you're all well, lots of love and best wishes for the holiday season,
Ebs xx
