the big bang didn't create something out of nothing
in the beginning of the big bang, all matter was condensed into a small, very hot very dense gravitational singularity, and when enough pressure was built up, it blew up and expanded extremely rapidly, projecting all sorts of matter into the universe that we know and love today, and red shift diagrams show that the universe is still expanding
now, when we come to the question of what exactly was happening around that singularity, nobody knows for certain. perhaps we are one universe in a marble bag of universes (just like men in black :D ), or perhaps all that existed was that singularity. we will never know for certain until we can somehow make it to the edge of the universe to see exactly what is on the other side. and considering that kind of travel will not be possible for many, many centuries to come, i'm not holding my breath to figure out exactly how we got here.
it's somewhat likely that we are the luckiest mistake nature ever intended. our planet was just the right distance from the star (sun) such that life was able to flourish. that's not saying that life doesn't flourish on other planets far away from ours; different conditions can lead to different forms of life. aliens may not necessarily survive on water like we do; perhaps for them, a hot day outside is when temperatures exceeed 300 degrees fahrenheit. life will undoubtedly exist in temperatures, pressures, and atmospheres completely different than ours.
