Building Thoughts

Mar 19, 2011 11:55

With the thought that I might be returning to college and have plans to build my own B&B in the future, it would seem to me that getting a degree in Architecture would be the smartest move. My focus would be eco-friendly/Green/LEED/net-zero structures. I've been searching online and, as I thought, there are jobs out there and they ALL require minimum: a bachelor's degree in Arch. Those who know the industry, thoughts?

I'm leaving this public so that folks can spread this request for knowledge around. Please consider doing so.

I have my goals and I really wish someone had hit me on the head when I left college and at least suggested that I only take a year or two off rather than dropping out altogether. The incomparable mlerules has offered to help me find out if I can still use my college credits from earlier this century. It would be wonderful if all that money and time wasn't utterly wasted. The thing is, working for myself, I won't really feel the need for a degree. But to earn the money to afford to break off and start my business and purchase my own land and all that I need a well-paying job and no one wants to pay a college drop-out tons of cash. I'm lucky but obviously not that lucky. I know I will likely have to rely on others to help me with the financing even if it's just a bank loan but I'd rather pay for as much of my property and business on my own as possible. More will be possible with a good job that pays well.

Learning architecture makes sense since it's a skill I can use and would help demystify the codes and zoning laws and such. It would also help me in the purchasing of land because I'd know what sort of structural needs I'd have to consider for long-lasting, comfortable, pleasing structures. Sure, Simon Dale is living in a house we all built without a degree in architecture but he's paying for it by knowing tech and web design through an innate talent I've never had. None of my talents lend themselves to the amassing of any kind of wealth unless one is incredibly lucky, incredibly famous or incredibly dead with a good PR agent.

All that said, if you can think of a better degree for someone with my goals, brain and temperament, please feel free to share. Certainly there are more interesting things I'd enjoy learning but I'm having trouble coming up with anything more useful.
