I love Totosai - I don't know how he's lived so long, what with how he pisses off all the most powerful demons, but that's what makes him so awesome.

He is a crazy old bastard, isn't he? LOL, it was fun to have a character who wasn't trembling in fear of (or half in love with) Sesshoumaru for a change. This is actually a little side-trip away from the story arc that popped into my head a few weeks ago, but I think its going to work out even better in the end...even if we have to wait a couple of chapters to see some real action!

stone is an odd choice when you have the master of Japanese steel to do your work.

Well, in the manga at least, it seems like the youkai swordsmiths always use some sort of living tissue (usually teeth) to forge their swords. I had this brilliant idea for Sesshoumaru to forge a weapon for Kagome, but I didn't quite feel like he was at a point where he was willing to give up a part of himself for that. So instead, he gives Totosai a stone arrowhead to work with. It's like - he's trying to do the right thing, but going about it in the wrong way, thanks to his own stubbornness and inability to see beyond his own grief and need.

And, well, all actions have consequences...and Sess seems the type that learns lessons the hard way, so they're not quite out of the woods yet.

The anime made him into a crazy old coot. In the manga he is the master of the swords. He shows up when the swords call him. He warns IY that if Tessaiga dies part of him will die too. He knew when Tenseiga felt Sesshoumaru had learned compassion. He knew what was necessary to help IY grow up by fighting Ryuukotsusei. He knew when Tenseiga and Tessaiga would merge. He knew how that Tenseiga led IY out of the Meidou. He knew that Bakusaiga had been formed and he knew why Tessaiga had cut off Sesshoumaru's arm in the first place.

I still do not believe that he had the nerve to lie to Sesshoumaru after discovering that Sesshoumaru had talked to Shishinki and blew away half his house.

Eh, even in the manga, he has a mouth on him. That's the characteristic I wanted to use here. When we first meet him, he seems to fear Sesshoumaru (running from him instead of completing his commission), but as the story goes on, he's one of the few who bothers to speak to him at his own level.

His great ability to craft swords was what led him to be able to forge a weapon from stone instead of some (formerly) living, breathing tissue. I just winged it here, but before I "officially" post this to the collection, I will actually do a bit more research and see if I can't turn up some authentic materials for the finished product (I don't want KK correcting me because I was too lazy to look, LOL!!).
