Twenty odd years of loving companionship had given him a unique insight into her moods, and he knew that comfort was sorely required the moment he walked into the bedroom to find her standing vacantly before the mirror.
“Go with the red dress,” he said softly, pulling it from the wardrobe and holding it out to her.
She blinked, almost as if she were just noticing him for the first time. “I don’t think I’ll go,” she said quietly, her gaze returning to the full-length mirror she’d insisted on having.
He dropped the dress on the bed, moving to stand behind her and gently gathering her thick black hair in his hands, winding it into an elegant bun at the back of her head and holding it there, admiring his handiwork over her shoulder.
“You would deny me the privilege of dancing with you?” he asked, his voice a low teasing rumble as he gently nuzzled her neck.
She snorted. “I’ll look like a cradle-robber, Sesshoumaru.”
He buried his nose in her hair, breathing in her alluring scent. “Never,” he murmured.
“I look old enough to be your mother,” she said bitterly, turning her face away from him, but not pulling away from his body.
“Anyone who assumes that is a fool,” he replied, releasing her hair and allowing it to tumble freely over her shoulders. “And will be dealt with accordingly.”
She glanced back at the mirror before sighing, leaning back into his embrace. “Red, you said?”
