Do you have a song that you would play only while wearing your ear phones or headset? Something you don't dare play on loud speaker anymore, but absolutely enjoy listening to it. Ones that you hope no one asks you about when going through your playlist?
Welcome to the world of Guilty Pleasure songs!
Though after such a long journey with different genre of songs and music, I am no longer guilty of liking songs across genre just because they are out of time or some might consider not so cool anymore. Because by now I know exactly why I like the songs I like or enjoy. But there are still a few songs I could proudly put under this guilty pleasure genre (Esh, I do realise it doesn't make it so guilty if I proudly put it in there!), as I guess the definition of what guilty pleasure is changes across countries/cities and across kind of people you hang out with.
Glee got me thinking about this in their recent episode called "Guilty Pleasures" (Surprise!). It certainly was a joyful episode revisiting the songs that were just pure fun without any labels attached to them. They had some Wake me up! from Wham! , Copacabana by Barry Manilow, Wannabe - Spice Girls, Phil Collis (Don't agree!) and Mama Mia - Abba playing in the episode. But how do I categorize my guilty pleasures?
I wouldn't put anything I consider my mum's retro into a guilty pleasure list as I absolutely love listening to them from when I was a kid to even now. These might be considered not so cool in a lot of places, many countries especially, but I just cannot get to put Abba, Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Tina Charles, Tina Turner into that list at all. I am not guilty :). Neither does any of my musicals geek, gleeky songs.
So what starts to qualify into that list for me is my retro pop! The few songs that still cheers me up when i listen to them, and I do sing along in my head, the pop from the 90s. No, no, not all of them. Though many were not as lame as today's Pop (I don't even want to go there and open that box!). If you were in your teen in 90s, you did listen to a lot of pop, a lot of boy bands, girl bands, and we did love it back then! We had all the tapes, we swayed along, they were amazing, until the millennium turned over, and that kind of pop wasn't cool anymore, hip hop, trance, electronic started coming in , then some more of 'what did he just say' kind of lyrics in the current pop. Or if you were like me, by the end of 90s you started discovering the whole new world of rock and metal and then there was no turning back.
But I am talking about a few of those songs back in the 90s, that jump in and get added to my guilty pleasure list! Yes so lets see... :D
Hey Mr.DJ, The call, Don't want you back - By the Backstreet boys (Yes, the AJ McLean centric songs, oops! yea I remember their names, and yea, back then I liked them better than Nsync)
Tearing up my heart, Bye bye bye - Nsync , Justin Timberlake wouldn't have made it if not for his Nsync fans
Fly by - Blue
Let's dance, When the lights go out - Five
Picture of you, And all the Bee Gees covers - Boyzone
Spice Girls, na I can't get to put them in that list. I do like them, they were pretty awesome girl power team till they lasted.
Oh, ya I do love singing with all the girls in Lady Marmalade - The pink, Mya, Lil Kim, Christina version!
So there its out. Don't come to any conclusions about my music taste. Its as intact as it can be. My love for Floyd, Maiden, Metallica , Nirvana and likes of those don't change one bit. But if I claim to be a person to always have a background score to my life, these guilty pleasure do find their way in during certain moods.
I am a sum total of all my music love!
90's music played a great part in my early teenage life. The one that taught me the difference between my mum's retro played at home during the 80s and the classic rock and metal that I came to know later.
This is my guilty pleasure week!
What is your guilty pleasure song?
