Title: To Err Is Human
Author: ebony_miasma
Rating: PG-13 (subject to change)
Description: A friendship undergoes the ultimate test. Will the situation tear them apart? Or will they be able to forgive and accept?
Author’s Note: This story isn’t slash. I wanted to do a non-slashy story that focused more on a test friendship rather than Mike and Chester working to maintain their romantic relationship. I don’t know where this is going, or if I’ll even make it past this prologue. Well, that's not entirely true... I have an idea in mind. It was just something that I had been thinking about recently.

Prologue: In Too Deep
“She’s very young, Chester,” Mike said, concerned that his friend was getting himself into big trouble.
“Yeah, I know. But she’s eighteen, it isn’t like we’re doing something illegal,” Chester reasoned. “We’re both adults here.”
“You more so than her,” Mike observed.
“Eleven years is not that big of a deal, Mike. And you’ve met her. Don’t you think she’s nice?”
Mike nodded. Savannah was kind, well mannered, and very good. But that’s also what made him uneasy. Chester wasn’t exactly a saint. Well, neither was he, at times, but not as extreme as his friend.
As far as looks went, Savannah was very attractive. Chester prefers brunettes, so she had long brown hair, deep brown eyes, and tanned skin. There were also some other things Mike had noticed, being a straight man and all that.
“If she makes you happy…”
“She does, Mike. She really does,” Chester said in his most assuring voice, and then gave Mike a smile.
“Okay, Chaz.”

Despite many protests from her parents, Savannah had packed numerous bags into an old, unreliable Oldsmobile, which happened to be Chester’s car. She had not been able to secure a dorm room at college, and the last thing she wanted was to live with her parents, so she thought of another option: move in with her older, carefree boyfriend.
Chester, who sat in the front seat, smoked a cigarette to calm his nerves. He did realize coming around his girlfriend’s parents smelling of tobacco wasn’t very wise, but the situation was enough to make him jump out of skin. Out of all the circumstances he’d been in, this feared him most. He didn’t deal with meeting a girl’s parents anymore; it seemed juvenile and stupid to do so. Plus Savannah told him to stay inside the car.
“Mom, Dad, calm down please. It’s not like I’m dropping out of college to become a stripper or something,” she said in a serious tone, but the smile on her face suggested that she was trying to get a rise out of her parents. It had worked.
“Honey, I’m serious about this,” her mom said. “If you go off with that man, you are never to come back here again. I didn’t raise you to be some older man’s whore.”
The young girl stood still, said nothing, and tried her hardest to hold back her tears, but failed. One single tear fell and others soon followed, her lip trembling, her eyes large and sad. The way she looked made it seem like she more eight than eighteen.
“You’re not ready for this,” her father said, “stay.”
At that moment, Chester had decided to come out. He had looked into his rear view mirror and saw that Savannah’s last bag was large and, by the way she was dragging it, quite heavy. Taking a closer look, he could see that she was crying. He ran to her, tried to take her bag and hold her close, but she pushed him away.
“Let’s go,” her voice cracked and sounded even worse when she yelled, “Now.”
They both got inside the car. He felt uncomfortable with the sobbing girl in his raggedy burgundy passenger seat. His relationships had never become this involved, never this immense. While driving to his home, he really thought about what all this could mean. Truthfully, he didn’t consider all the consequences when she asked to stay with him. All he could imagine was the time they would spend together, making love.
During the silent ride, tons of complications passed though his mind. Then, at a stoplight, he turned to look at her again. She was no longer crying, but staring, waiting for something to lift her up.
“I love you,” Chester said.
“I love you too.”
The light turned green, giving them the sign to go.
