Sometime in early 1993, magic began to appear. No one knows where it came from, if it existed previously and died out, been hidden away from the general population, or just suddenly began to take root. All that was known was that children started to display the ability to do extraordinary things, to read minds or the future, to move objects, to create ice or fire, to disappear completely. The only indication that these people were any different to anyone else, aside from the abilities themselves, was a shimmer in their blood - a sheen across the surface of the liquid, much like oil.

The abilities of these children caused a panic in the people, those who called them demons, deformities, dangers. Governments across the world attempted to control the situation as best they could while they decided what to do, but they stalled too long. Vigilante groups began to form, hunting down those with the 'glitter', cutting them as a test before slaughtering them. In defence, the then called 'witches' began to fight back. War broke out. Cities were destroyed, governments fell, chaos reigned for many years.

With the population of witches growing and the Hunters becoming a more organised front, one particularly fierce battleground stretched across France, Germany and Austria, culminating in a huge battle that changed the surface of the planet. A rift was torn in the earth and the sky, shifting continents. The Hunters retreated into the South (contains lower Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia), creating a military organisation known as Prevent, spreading across the land and becoming a totalitarian regime. Forty years after this battle, and the South is a post-apocalyptic landscape, most cities destroyed and those left patrolled by soldiers, with checking gates controlling entry and exit. ID declaring yourself a non-witch is necessary for survival. Witches are hunted down ruthlessly and killed, with sympathisers, spies and rebels treated no better. The North (North America, South America, the upper half of Europe), in contrast, is witch-tolerant, ruled by a series of 'temples', priests and academics. The war is still ongoing, but has reached a stalemate due to the riftzone, and the temples nearer the rift are dedicated to training young witches to become soldiers. Refugees from the South sometimes manage to make it through to the North, but it largely soldiers crossing in from the North to fight.

The technological level of both sides has regressed slightly, with the South most effected. Most utilities, such as water and electricity are still readily available, but travel and communication are incredibly restricted, used by Prevent alone. Most people don't recognise things that we would consider commonplace, such as computers, automobiles, mobile telephones and trains. In the North, the need to rebuild after the initial war led to a focus on industry and a renewal in a sense of community, which subsequently led to less personal and working isolation and alienation by technology.

History: Dominique was born in the South, the third child in a strong and loving family. Her glitter didn't show itself fully until she was six, and after her mother spent several hours talking her back to herself, her family decided to leave the South, both for her safety and in the hopes she would receive help in controlling her abilities in the North. She was told to keep strict control over herself as they travelled, but when her family were stopped by a group of Prent soldiers, her fear grew too strong and she lost control. Her powers burst randomly, giving a mixed an undirected display of her abilities - enough for the Prents to realise she was a witch, but not for her to protect herself or her family. The soldiers attacked, Dominique beaten and stabbed several times before her father pushed the soldier away from her. She was told to run, and she did. Her family all died that day, her mother and father, her elder twin brothers and her baby sister.

Dominique kept running for several days, only stopping, collapsing in an alley, when she really couldn't go on any further. Discovered by a Brother from the House of Masks (a secret Brotherhood of rebels and resistance soldiers in the South), she was taken to one of their temples and nursed back to health. Realising the strength of her abilities, the Fathers decided to allow her to stay despite the fact she was female, making her the first woman to earn a mask in the House of Masks. She was kept within the temples for several years, educated by the Fathers alongside her training to keep her abilities under control and to use them. At seventeen, she began to run small missions, delivering packages and messages. One of these missions led her to Acacio Serna, a dreamchaser who was, at the time, trapped in a city with an outdated identification pass. Acacio was working as a street whore, so Dominique posed as a customer in order to get him alone, but after the message she carried was passed along, he suggested spending the night she had paid for together, and she agreed.

She left Acacio in that city to return to the temple, but he arrived a few days later. He was reunited with an old lover, Desidero, who was also a member of the House of Masks. Something of a fledgling friendship was forged between the three of them, and when it was time for Acacio to move on, both Desidero and Dominique went with him.

They travelled together for many years, their friendship growing stronger and eventually developing into a sexual and romantic relationship between all three of them. Desidero and Acacio guided and supported Dominique through her insecurities and uncertainties, taught her better how to survive in the South without losing heart. They made something of a family together, and Dominique flourished in it.

But the dangers of the South did not disappear, and one day all three of them walked into a Prent ambush. A family had asked for Acacio to help find their daughter, but they had been paid into delivering the dreamchaser to the soldiers. In the resulting battle, Acacio ran, Desidero was fatally shot, and Dominique, in the strong surge of emotion, lost control of her abilities. She crushed the soldiers attacking them, but it was too late for Desidero, and he died in her arms shortly after. Before he could pass completely, she took his memories, knowing they were important to Acacio (and herself). In the process, however, she took on his personality, and wandered confused for several days before she regained herself. By that point, Acacio was long lost.

Determined to find him, she wandered the South searching for him, following any clues or rumours for four years. Eventually this takes her to the North, where she meets Jackie Bledsoe-Follet. Really only intending to stay until she's hunted down word of where Acacio went next, Dominique nevertheless finds the woman incredibly interesting, and their paths cross several times before Dominique kisses her. Their relationship grows closer from that point, Dominique still supposedly looking for Acacio, both of them aware that she should be moving on at any point. But Jackie buys her an apartment, and Dominique tries to ignore the quiet guilt that she isn't doing what she should, is slowly settling herself down to stay.

Through a chance encounter, Dominique meets Acacio's son, who recognises her (through his own abilities) as being important to his father. He arranges for her to be taken to Acacio, to finally pass Desidero's memories along and complete her quest. The break is difficult for her relationship with Jackie, but she knows she loves the woman and promises to return to her if she's able. She very pointedly does not say goodbye.

The meeting with Acacio is bittersweet, as Dominique recognises that she still loves him, but feels the absence of Desidero too greatly for them to ever be a simple couple, even if she hadn't met Jackie. Acacio thanks her for showing him Desidero's memories and gives her relationship with Jackie his blessing, telling her to return to the North and be happy.

She keeps her promise to Jackie in returning to her, but without the buffer of her quest and after so recently looking through Desidero's memories (and reliving his death), she also begins to really grieve for the man where she hadn't before. Still, Acacio's son arranges for her to be made a legal citizen, she finds a job, and truly starts to settle in the new life she's found for herself.

Personality: Dominique keeps herself carefully contained at all times. This effects most everything about her, but applies most importantly to her emotions. She is not emotionally stunted in the clinical sense. If anything, she is the opposite, needing to be aware of all of her emotions and the effects they have upon her. Her emotions are whole, and she experiences the full range of them, but she actively keeps them soft and muted, does not outwardly display them as strongly as she might feel them. Strong, passionate emotions are dangerous, they should not be pandered to or acted upon. She can appear quite stoic because of this, only giving muted expressions and calm reactions.

Due to the death of her family and her social interaction being limited in the temples, Dominique was very shy and uncertain around people. Her time with Desidero and Acacio boosted her confidence, but she can still feel awkward and hesitant with people if in an incredibly new situation. Having experienced a lot, this happens very rarely. She still has the remnants of one physical tick, turning her head ever so slightly to hide her blind eye if attention is brought to it, despite the fact she has long accepted that she is not ugly or deformed.

She has had to take after herself for a long time, is smart, quick and capable. She has been a soldier, has killed people when it was necessary, does not abide the strong preying on the weak. She can and will stand up and fight, generally prefers it, but also knows that there is no shame in running and hiding if that is the best course of action. That said, she can be internally self-deprecating, and carries quite a bit of guilt because of the sacrifices made for her. She usually fights off these feelings with the thought that she should be strong and brave in their honour, but they also make her very difficult to nettle. Personal insults are brushed aside or playfully agreed with, as no one can know her shortcomings better than she can. Dominique has no problems listing her flaws openly, with a few exaggerations thrown in for fun. She spent far too long with Desidero to rise so easily or be hurt by things like that, usually turns them into the same strange form of banter she had had with Desidero. Anti-witch statements and comments on her eye are the only exceptions to this, the former will have her angry while the latter causes the physical tick previously mentioned.

She is incredibly protective over the ones she loves, determined not to lose anyone else. She has felt the strength of love and family and doesn't discount them, deny them or push them away. Sex and sexuality are very open and free in the South, and Dominique doesn't really understand 'Northern' ways of approaching them, be that defining or discriminating against people for their tastes or just the strange courting rituals people use to avoid stating their intentions directly. She is openly physically affectionate in the ways she can't be with her expressions or manner, will reach out and touch, and has no problems or uncertainties regarding sex or the discussion of it.

Abilities: Dominique is very powerful type of witch known as a 'Mirror'.

Reading
Dominique can look inside a person and see everything there freely, be it their thoughts and feelings at that moment, their deeper impulses, their memories, or their abilities.

Reflection
Her power's automatic reaction to looking within another is to emulate them in every way possible. In the most complete form of this, her own personality, thoughts, feelings and abilities are pushed aside. She is essentially no longer herself. Though this should degrade slowly over time, it is incredibly difficult for her to find her way back from this state without outside help.

Vessel
As when fully reflecting another she contains everything about them, she can, with careful concentration, keep parts within herself (this is how she carried Desidero's memories). She can do this with abilities or powers, too, but as those are usually active things, and there is something of a paradox within the cycle of needing her own abilities to reflect another's, they will degrade and fade over time.

Manipulation
The most difficult and powerful of her abilities is in keeping herself pushed into another and directly effecting them from the inside. She can direct someone's thoughts or memories, close down their abilities, or even delve into the depths of their neural system and shut down parts of their body.

Dominique's abilities want to be free, are naturally designed to reflect everyone she comes across. It requires a great deal of mental control to keep them contained, even more so just to unleash a tiny part to actually use. Therefore, despite the strength of her abilities, particularly in manipulation, she does not use them lightly.

She also has experience as a resistance fighter: basic survival and first-aid skills, knowledge of guns, knives and explosives, stealth tactics and hand-to-hand combat.

Sample: [Dominique has already found her own possessions and changed out of the dress into her own well-worn jeans and t-shirt. There's a very slight frown between her brows as the mirror begins filming, and she's quiet for a time, unsure if this is really what the cats had told her or some sort of joke. Left with little other option, though, she starts talking.]

I am told this is a communication system. I don't know who I am communicating with, but I would hope some contact with this 'Queen of Hearts'. I have questions that these scrolls the cats keep giving me do not answer.

[She pauses for a moment, looking away at one of the cats in question, but decides not to pursue that point and turns back.]

Most importantly, I would like to request to be returned. I'm sure your organisation is just, but I have my own alliances, and I do not need to be protected or have my needs met.

[She tilts her head ever so slightly, as if considering, but decides that is all she has to say.]

I will wait here for your response.
