So there I was at work this morning and the store manager walks up to me at 7:30 AM and says to me, "I just wanted to let you know that you've been named employee of the month ( Read more... )

I've been working at my job for 3 years. There are almost 200 employees. I've never been employee of the month, while some people have been multiple times. I was good enough to promote, but not good enough to be told "We appreciate having you here!". I don't know about you, but I like knowing that my work is appreciated.

It's always nice to be recognized but it's also ridiculous not to award someone a little something to show it's not just about appearances.

A handshake and a pat on the back is fine. You may or not know that I work at a Walmart which is the largest retailer in the world. Most stores give 50 dollar gift cards to the winners of this award and grant them preferred parking at the storefront for the month. Our store doesn't because our manager is a cheap fucking penny pinching bastard.

That was what bothered me most. That and the fact that they don't award ANYONE with bonuses or good job buttons which almost all other stores do. Four buttons means one free share of stock in the company (less than 50 bucks).

They pay people 7 dollars an hour to break their balls for them and can't reward them with anything? That's just bullshit IMHO.

Just my two cents...

Maybe it's just me, but I don't look for any material reward for doing what I'm supposed to do, other than getting a good raise at the end of the year. Like I need one more piece of crap littering my house.

Objects have never made me feel good about myself and never will. But there's nothing like being singled out in front of your peers and being able to say "I RULE!!! YOU SUCK!!!!"

But that's just how I feel about it.

It's not that I look for any material reward. I get handshakes and pats on the back all the time because I bust my balls and work hard everyday.

I don't really believe in one person being singled out in a store where 334 people work is fair. I think a much more fitting reward would be to reward each person who management feels is worthy a good job badge.

I'm not a "I'm better than you" kind of person. I just know that if I were a manager and I wanted to show my employees that I appreciated them, I'd throw them a certificate for a nice meal or give them a twenty dollar bonus or something.

People tend to appreciate material rewards more because there is a small sacrifice on the behalf of the giver. That shows appreciation IMHO.

I see my sense of humor is still unappreciated :P

I guess I'm growning into a grumpy old man. My bad, hehe.
