Why do people suck?

A friend of mine who works for BioWare in Canada, Jennifer Hepler, has become the target of a massive, coordinated hate and harassment campaign, probably organized by the same losers and shit-for-brains who perpetrated the harassment against caprine and me over "LOL Together". I read about that and I think it is not just that people are jerks on the internet, but the really intense sexism that pervades geekdom...and espeically video game geekdom. Tell Jennifer Helper that there are people who side with her!

But as for the argument...here's what irritates me about it. She says she thinks it should be an *option* to skip combat. People reply she wants to cut out game mechanics. This ticks me off, because as a person who has played lots and lots of Bioware games, I'd counter that combat isn't *the* game mechanics, it is one of the game mechanics. The conversation wheel is a game mechanic too! Scanning planets is a game mechanic. Driving around int the Mako is a game mechanic. There are a LOT of game mechanics--combat isn't the only one...and for many players not the only important one. Combat isn't the only thing that makes a video game a video game...and there should be no big deal in making it option for games.

But I think this isn't about the idea. I think it is about how she is a woman. It was the same with how people were super creepy over Jade Raymond...and really any woman in the video game industry who isn't a booth babe. Grrr.
