So while my flatmates and I have been gleefully comparing the funny differences between the UK and the US, I discovered my new favorite word/phrase: Queue! Definition: To line up. It can be used in many different ways such as to queue up, queue hop, simply just to queue in the queue and it is, as my flatmate Mary pointed out, very fun to spell! I have news other than my queueing adventures though.
I am currently not feeling that physically well, I hope that it is just a cold that will subside before my first officially lecture on Thursday though. I am supposed to have a "Music and Historical Culture" class on Mondays (today) but music classes don't start until next week apparently so all those interested will have time to sign up for choir groups and the like. Last week was full of orientation and informational meetings as well as a whole slew of social events put on by the very active SU (student union) here. All of these events of course involve liquor because I just wouldn't be in England if they didn't. I have found my way to the library where I can use the internet for free which is nice but still not as nice as having the internet in my flat. I am working on that and will promptly inform you when I get it so I can chat and Skype with anyone who wants to. For the time being I will stick to updating this way so please spread the word to those who don't have lj or don't check it often. Ok, on to more interesting things:
The 80's are back here in a big way! Leggings, leg warmers, pumps, side ponytails, lycra, it is all back and bigger than ever! I simply refuse to change my whole fashion sense and go back to leggings but it is enjoyable to see other people doing it. In other fun random news, I bought a pink rose plant. I find it somehow comforting to have something to take care of and it is pretty and of course pink! I also bought a nice (actually very cheap) bottle of wine the other day, only to discover that it was made in California. I am such an idiot to come all the way over here just so I can buy an American-made wine.
So I will walk you through my life since I updated last. I went to this huge SU event called "Club Sandwich" last Wednesday. Apparently, this is a big event every week and it was fun and full of lots of American pop music and of course liquor. I went with my flatmates and we had fun dancing and hanging out on the balcony of the SU until the wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately, I had to get up very early the next morning to enroll with the college. =( Thursday night we decided to stay in and watch a movie (to recover from the night before). I watched a movie with my flatmates called "Withnail & I". It was a "classic British film" according to them and they laughed hysterically the whole time while I didn't exactly understand all of the humor but found it exciting to watch a real British movie (not an American interpretation). Friday I went to Fresher's Fair which is like a big fair for all of the clubs and societies you can get involved with. I signed up for the Liberal Democrats group, the GLBT group, and the super cool Women's group that has this really nice woman running it who is also a history major! I am so excited for the first meeting on Wednesday! I also got lots of "freebies" and found stuff to put up on the walls in my flat which were looking mighty bare. Also on Friday I attempted to change from my French language class to any history class because I thought this would be more practical. Apparently the International office here is also full of idiots who can't really help me so I figured out how to change this class myself and then got hell from the International office for doing so. I hope that I don't have to deal with them much from now on.
Friday night was really fun despite this because my flatmate Beth's boyfriend manages a band from Manchester and they came to London to play at a club so we all went to go see them. They played in this club above a pub in west London and I had a blast seeing them, drinking my pint, and then getting to meet them after. The band is called 52 Teenagers and we all bought their record (yes record!) and got them to sign it after. The youngest guy in the band, Dev, was really sweet and talked to me for a long time after the gig. He gave me his e-mail in case I want to "keep up" with him. This was all followed by a hilarious tube ride home. Saturday was a pretty boring day and the first day I felt sick so I mostly just hung out and took a walk around New Cross (the area of London I live in). I got to talk to my family though! And then I watched this popular show here called "Green Wing" with Mary on her laptop. It was really funny and I enjoyed it so we are going to watch some more tonight. Mary is really great, I love hanging out with her. I gave her a US dollar the other night and she was so excited that she hung it up on her wall. She reminds me a lot of Sam K. (She likes Red Dwarf too Sam!) So finally yesterday I went shopping with Chelsea at this great place just one tube stop up and I bought my very own dishes and cookware (so I don't have to use my flatmates anymore and feel guilty for not having my own!)
This week should hopefully pick up because tomorrow night there is a boat ride down the Thames. I have classes on Thursday and Friday, and then there is a big Casino Night Ball thingy on Saturday night. Luckily I brought a hot dress!
In closing I would just like to mention that I am now OPEN FOR VISITORS so if you would like to come visit at anytime, please just let me know. I have plenty of floor space and my very own bathroom to share. So please come! =)
