I've been meaning to post about this for awhile.
Read this.
I can't even believe that everyone involved in that hasn't been fired yet. This poor girl is now disabled because the police refused to recognize signs that she's bipolar. Not to mention listen to her parents, who were on their way to get her. It makes me sad to see that we really haven't come far at all when it comes to mental illness. It may be out there, instead of hidden, for the most part, but most people still have no fucking clue what it means to be mentally ill. What enrages me even more is the continued false portrayals of bipolar people on TV. Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are not the same thing. And most people who have the former do not act like raving lunatics on a regular basis. People with the latter can be perfectly functioning when they take their meds. Mental illness is not the same as mental retardation. Mental illness does not mean stark-raving-should-be-locked-up-mad. I don't know how much clearer it can get. If anyone who writes for a TV show would just pick up any of the current literature, they would know this. But no. It's very sad that because of false perceptions, this poor girl got raped and tortured. If the police officers involved with this just get a slap on the wrist, I will be very angry and very sad. I hope like hell that girl's parents get every penny they are asking for.
