Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.

The meeting last night went really well. I’m highly qualified for the program. My transcripts have all the courses they’re looking for, which is surprising considering that I took almost all of them at random. The only thing I’m possibly missing is 3 credit hours of speech, but I’m hoping they’ll count my Spanish Oral course for that. Thankfully, my statistics courses count as math, so I won’t have to take anymore of it, unless I want to. I’ve been thinking that I should take that math course for elementary teachers at South Suburban College anyway though. Math is a big portion of the Basic Skills Exam and to say I’m a little rusty would be an understatement. I’ll be taking the exam on November 4th, which is more than halfway through the semester, so I figure I should be well caught up by then. The application for the program is enormous, so I better start working on it. A major problem with it is the letters of recommendation. They need to be from people who can verify that I’ve worked with children. I have worked with children, but not since high school, and I haven’t kept in touch with any of the people in charge of the programs. In fact, one of them is dead, as far as I know. The other still coaches soccer at my high school, so maybe I’ll send a letter there to him, or just show up at one of his practices in a couple of weeks.

I’m not sure how I’m going to afford the tuition if I get into the program. It’s over $9000. Although the director did say that if I’m selected by one of the extremely high poverty districts, they’ll pay about $4000 of that, which I have to pay back once I’m hired. Also, supposedly, the government gives grants of about $3500 to people in the program, regardless of need. So, maybe I can cut my tuition down to around $3000. That would be nice. The best thing about the program is that come next August, I’ll have a paid teaching position with health benefits. It won’t pay much (around $30,000), but since that’s twice what I was making at Albany, I’ll take it. Some school districts even pay for all of your health benefits outright. That would be wicked awesome.

My parents’ flight gets in at 9:10pm tonight. It takes about an hour to get to Midway, so that gives me less than seven hours to get the house in order. Normally, that would be no problem, but considering that I still feel like shit, we’ll see what I get done.

edit: I registered for that math course and bought the book for it. The book was like $87.00 used. What the fuck is that? New schedule:
