Black Swan

[Level - Public]

I rarely do film reviews and I’m certainly not a seasoned critic. Nor do I often harp on / wax lyrical about a film. Media is subjective and we all of us are going to be drawn to different things inevitably. Film night at my place is a relaxed and fun affair (speaking of, on as usual tonight, 6.30pm doors open, 7.30/8pm first film, 9.30/10pm second film, bring selves, supplies and films - theme this week is Gents Choice).

However, I went to see ‘Black Swan’ last night. Now, avoiding celebrity gossip rags and websites and largely avoiding tv (no licence and I’m so used to it these days it doesn’t bother me) means I hadn’t a clue what to expect, other than it was getting lots of positive reviews, and from the one shot of the film I’d seen it looked stunning.

It was completely beautiful. Spoiler free commentary: the amount of work Natalie Portman must have put in was astounding. It isn’t for everyone, focussing largely on the world of ballet, the hard work they put in, high emotions. It’s also about obsession, madness, that the line between what is real, what is false and what is somewhere in-between is a rather fragile one. It was about a young woman striving for perfection, being driven by not only herself but others around her.

If you even remotely think it might be something you’d enjoy, go and see it on the big screen. As clichéd as it sounds, my heart fluttered the entire way through and I was leant forward, hands on mouth for most of it. It really got to me.

Oh, and if you'd like to read a rather better review by someone who suggested going to see it in the first place, go check out thedinster's review of it here (you'll need to be friended to see it).
