[Level - Public]
Friends - one of the lovely students at work had one of these the other day and I remarked on how lovely it was. She smiled and said not only had she made it herself, but it was to her own pattern and that it was a Mobius strip scarf. Now, those geeky amongst you are going to severely love this, especially if you can crochet (which I can’t but hints for a black one and a purple one if anyone has the time or inclination!). I told her so. So she kindly offered to type up the pattern for me and allow me to share it with you all. Ergo:
Möbius scarf pattern
With a double crochet yarn and an appropriately sized hook (4 or 4.5):
Foundation Chain
Leaving a tail of 4 to 6 inches to fasten in later, chain 93 stitches.
Row 1
Make a treble (yarn over hook, insert, pull through 2 loops, yarn over hook, pull through all loops) into the 3rd chain from the end; continue to make trebles in every chain until the row is complete. Do not turn.
Row 2
Lay the fabric flat then make a single twist in the fabric at the edge to your left and make a chain stitch into what until now was the bottom of the fabric (the unused part of the foundation chain). In the second stitch of this row make a double crochet, in the third a half-treble, and in the fourth a treble.
Now take out your hook and join the tail of the foundation chain into the top of the last treble of row one. Either use a darning needle or your crochet hook to make the join. The scarf now has a continuous loop at what will become its heart. While you are here, weave the loose end in so that it can’t be seen anymore, cutting off any excess.
Put a stitch marker (or a bit of contrasting yarn) into the chain stitch, to help with colour changes later, and with deciding where to stop in the final row.
Reinsert your hook in the last stitch made in row 2 and continue, putting a treble into every foundation chain loop or stitch as you come to it.
Row ?
After this, it becomes difficult to speak of rows. You are now chaining in a loop. You may wish to change colours. The stripes created will be either side of the central core of the scarf already created. Keep going until the scarf is a width that you like.
The end!
When you reach the appropriate width you can prepare to end the scarf. When you reach a point in the loop parallel to the row 2 stitch marker make this final set of stitches: 1 treble, 1 half treble, 1 double, 1 chain. Cut the thread to leave a tail of yarn and pull the thread through. Fasten in this tail end, and you are done.
