[Level - Public]
So on 12th June I turn not quite 30. To help me commiserate, I intend;
On Friday 12th June to wallow in the 80s joy which is DV80s in York
On Saturday 13th June to bask in burly style at Bump'N'Grindhouse in Cambridge
Somewhere between Monday 8th and Friday 12th June, I'll hopefully spend some time with my parents at Aston Cantolw (near Stratford and Birmingham) as it's my Dads birthday on 1st June and they'll be at the caravan from 1st through to 12th. Friends are welcome to come and play too, my parents aren't remotely grown up or scary - I'll probably schedule a barbeque or something, limited crash space available, bikes welcome! More on this as and when it gets sorted.
On a birthday related note -
presents.
I'll be honest, I love presents and fuss and cards. Some birthdays, I go 'No! Don't want to know this year!' but stuff it. I intend to go down smiling. However, I hasten to add, it has never and will never be about money.
I'd really like it if, should you want to get me anything, you make it yourself or buy it from a charity shop / pound store. It saves you pennies, gets your creative juices flowing and thoughtful pressies are always far superior to expensive pressies;
a CD full of tracks you think I should have
a painting you've done and think I'd like (hint hint
huggirl)
a pretty postcard you spotted or a photo you took, popped into a clip frame
a funky button and some ribbon you think I can use for my crafting
... these things are all fab.
But better yet, time with you doing something you think I'll enjoy;
take me to a favourite pub
walk me down a special path that you want to share
call me up and natter to me for an hour or so (with advance warning so I can make sure I’m in, with the phone on!).
write me a letter and include a silly joke and a newspaper clipping
invite me round to watch your favourite film because you think I’ll like it too and you know I’ve not seen it
Presents, in my family, have always been about time and thought and silliness rather than money. I’ll demonstrate;
One of my very favourite things is a rusty enamel pin-badge. It's yellow, with the Bat-man logo on it. Those of you on facebook can see it
here. It's from my Dad, as a silly, jokey replacement for a silver and amethyst deco-style bat broach (which was incredibly beautiful and subtle, pressie from Mumsykins, and I was gutted when I lost it). It is, in it's own way, even better than the original because he saw it for 50p at a car boot and grinned, wrapped it up in a fancy box and gave it to me for Christmas. I smile every time I look at it. I often chuckle too. Because he was grinning like a Cheshire cat as I opened it and it was really silly - we were crying with laughter for a little while. And he knew, as he picked it up on a rainy Saturday in Penrith Market in winter last year, that that’s what would happen. And that’s why it’s one of my favourite things.
And the year my parents got me a laptop? My favourite present was my bat-pen. It was the display one and Mum convinced the lady to let her have it. It was £1.99. It had a silly, naff plastic bat on the top which flapped its cardboard wings as you wrote. I used it so much, it died and I had to throw it out as the wings came to bits. And she knew it would be my favourite thing that year. It made me ‘squee’ every time I used it and it sat proudly on my desk, ready to cheer me up as and when needed. :D
Just so she doesn’t feel left out, the best present Debi has so far got me was this year - it was my light-up umbrella. It absolutely tickles me and I love the chance to use it. I’ve got a thing for umbrellas anyway but this is just the awesomest. And she just knew I’d adore it. *squeezy hug*
You, dear friends, matter to me. I don’t need your money - your time and thoughts are far more precious to me. Share that with me and I’ll feel like a Queen.
Oh, and if all else fails? Lush. Just saying ;)
