I was going through my cell phone contacts list to clean it up and came across an entry of a person who passed away recently. This was a person whom I've never met face to face but had many conversations on the phone that were business related. This person was the manager of a top selling band in Canada that I got the opportunity to tour with back in April. This person was not only the band's manager, but was also the lead singer's mother. Her name was Betty and was always very nice to me on the phone. She had a gruff yet very friendly voice. When, at one point, I had called her to say that a direct deposit of some show pay I was owed did not show up in my account, she drove through a snow storm to get to the bank directly to handle the situation. Betty passed away about 2 months ago.
I knew that it would do me no good to keep the entry in my phone but I still felt sad when I finally erased it. It still amazes me how people developed relationships, conduct business and build friendships without ever meeting in person and how much of an important part of our lives these are and what part modern technology plays in it. I have come to the conclusion that these tools, cell phones, internet, etc. actually do make the world a better place because of the ability of easy communication over the long distances. Some people have argued that these tools hinder us from going out to seek other people but, just think of all the wars that have occurred throughout history because word did not travel fast and then those wars ending as soon as the opposing parties get a chance to actually communicate.
Just my thoughts of the morning.
R.I.P. Betty. Thanks for taking care of things over the great distances.
